Florence airport closes for at least 2 months !!

To all fodorities planning a flight trip to/from Florence in the next 2 months !!

It SEEMS that Florence airport will close for temporary infrastructure works (runway etc..) starting from February 2nd for at least 2 months !!

These news did not come out officially yet, so it might be that some airlines and travel agencies are even not yet informed !!

I anyway suggest you travellers to enquiry with your airline company or travel agency for further information on alternative airports arrangments.
For example Lufthansa has re-scheduled all their Florence flights to/from Pisa for this period.

As soon as I get further information I will let you know !

The folks on SlowTalk have been posting information on this: http://slowtalk.com/groupee/forums/a...85/m/419103928 There is a link to the airport, which discusses this closing (the Italian site, not English).

PS: This is the actual link http://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/pagine/index.htm to the article. Click on the left side "News Ufficio Stampa" then click on "Ultime Notizie" It's in Italian, but translated it give a 1 March date for the closing.

Fabio, where did you get the Feb 2nd date?

The press release (in Italian) on the Aeroporto di Firenze Web site says that the closing will be "not after March 1" and that the airport will reopen "not after the month of May."

In all likelihood, most air traffic will be rerouted to the airport at Pisa, which has recently been expanded.

There are regular and easy connections from Pisa airport to downtown Florence.

There's no "seems" about this, and AdF announced all this officially last year They've even now got round to publishing their press release in English as well as in Italian (http://tinyurl.com/awdyb), and if Fabio has some hard data to support his claim the press release is wrong, he really ought to tell us what it is.

The issue that matters now is what's your carrier going to do about it. For which you need to speak to your carrier.

But surely everyone on this board uses low-costs to Pisa anyway?

Feb 2nd is just related to the actual Lufthansa flight change of schedule so I assume that until Feb 1st they still fly into and from Florence, while from Feb 2nd Lufthansa flights are scheduled to/from Pisa, but it might be that other airlines will have different statements ! or maybe also Lufthansa will change again in case the starting date of these works will change......
everything is still confusing !

Yes it was announced since a long time but not the exact period. I would not rely on the press to get the right starting day of these works.
First they wrote march to may for 3 months, now it seems february-march (only 2 months)... !!

Yes, my intention with this message was exactly to let you all be aware on this issue and to check with your airlines what they are going to do !!

Well Fabrio, I hope it's Feb - March! I am planning to fly to Florence on May 11th, but I'm sure Air France will fly me into Pisa...I hope...if the airport is still closed. There is someone on this fodors board that called one of the airlines and they had no clue to the upcoming closing.

Please keep us posted if you find out more information.

Monica, for sure I will !

What is still missing now is an official communication from AdF to all airlines about the exact date of closure. That's why some airlines did not take any action or decision yet !

Fabio was right.

Here is a message posted on another board by a travel agency in Florence:

"La Nazione, the local Firenze newspaper has just reported that Peretola airport in Firenze will now be closed starting 2 February for three months, rather than the announced March closing.

"Still to be determined is whether they will have baggage check-in at the Peretola airport and arrangements for bus service for flights diverted to either Pisa or Bologna.

"The airport authorities are notifying the airlines of this change in closing dates. They advise us to check with the individual airlines to see which airport they are using."

Hi - I responded to this issue on another board. I was told the Feb 2 - March 26 dates by Lufhtnasa when they called A WEEK AGO to reroute my flight. I just called AirFrance and was told (somewhat irritably) that they knew nothing about it.....This is for a flight 5 weeks away.

communication problem is the main problem on this issue !
But even Air France wil be anyway informed or has to inform all their own staff in a better way, and they will have to take decision as well !!
Transport to Florence will be somehow
secured by bus or train.
As regards re-opening on 26th march, this might be prolonged according to the actual time of works nedeed once started !! nobody knows right now !

It is nice that Lufthansa called you already one week ago !

here are some news from AdF (Aeroporto di Firenze) as of yesterday's release:

AdF had offered all airlines the usual groud service still at FLR as check-in, baggage x-ray service and surface transport by shuttle bus from FLR to PSA or to other airports in the area.

Some airlines as Air France, Alitalia, Carpair, Flybaboo, Lufthansa and Meridiana have opted for rerouting to PSA airport, INCLUDING the check-in and passenger boarding at PSA rather than in FLR ! This means that all passengers have to arrange surface transport to/from FLR by their own. There is a very good train connection from PSA airport to Florence S.M.N. central station.
Austrian airlines will operate to/from Bologna
Club Air and SN Brussels still have to decide
Delta Aerotaxi will operate to/from Siena airport

Someone posted on another travel board that Florence airport is supposed to reopen April 7.

But we're talking about Italy here...

I heard Florence airport was to re-open May 1. But I'd check. It seems most flights scheduled into there go to Pisa instead.

I am booked on a flight from Florence at 7am in very late May. Is this realistic? If not, I may need to change my hotel from Florence to Pisa!

Lates news say FLR airport will re-open this saturday 8th April at 12 noon. Nevertheless the two major airlines Lufthansa and Air France will remain in Pisa until May 2nd, as already fixed with PSA airport authorities agreement. All other airlines are supposed to fly to/from FLR starting this weekend.
