Fish 'n Chips in York

I enjoyed reading the Fish 'n Chips in London thread. Any recommendations for York?

I don't know about York, but if you take a trip to Whitby when you're there, you'll find the chippie which Rick Stein says to be the best in Britain. It's The Magpie Cafe <BR>opposite the fish dock. There are often quite long queues there but it's worth the wait.<BR>On the same subject, if you look at Http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Ar...350919,00.html you'll see Gavin Newsham's nominations for the 10 best chippies in Britain.<BR><BR>At http://www.guardian.co.uk/Archive/Ar...369094,00.html you'll see other nominations from readers.

Thanks, Sylvia. Those were good sites. Any other recommendations? I'd also be interested in any other good places to eat in York.

Vita - for the ultimate York experience in eating you must go to Bettys, the famous tearooms. They don't just serve afternoon tea although it is a speciality - try a "warm fat rascal" if you are hungry it is a special fruit based scone that is unique to Bettys.

Hi Vita,I live in York so I know them all!!!!! Yorkshire fish and chips are the DEFINITIVE fish and chips. Go to "Petergate Fisheries" in High Petergate, right in the very centre of town. You either get take-away or there is a lovely restaurant upstairs. There is often a queue but it is well worth the wat. Enjoy!!!!!

For the record, I had a tea at Betty's in York and was totally underwhelmed. The cake was very dry--and over priced.<BR><BR>Personally, I would not go there again.<BR><BR>Just my tuppence.

There is a very famous fish and chip restaurant near York called Harry's, I believe. I doubt if there is an internet address but it is wonderful. When you're there you might ask--most locals know it. Don't forget the malt vinegar!

I had tea at Betty's and had a fruit tart to die for. They have a wonderful selection of goodies to choose from.
