Janis, just re-reading the beginning of your report. B2, who was such a room grabbing non-participant is actually your friend?

Janis, thanks for the fine finish. I loved both the trip reports immensely.

StCirq, as a normally independent traveler I would *totally* be interested in signing up for one of your tours!

Clearly your excellent trip planning was wasted on the B's but the rest of us benefit from your detailed account and we really appreciate it! Excellent report. I hope your ankle heals soon. Therapy works wonders.

janis- so sorry about your ankle. But it is nice to hear that you were taken care of by the Brits. :

I would not have given up the four-poster, but that is me. You were unbelievably gracious, I must say!

Loved the report and hope you recover quickly. Those bad sprains can be a pain for a lot longer than you think (as stated above, now more prone to being sprained again and the arthritis will eventually set in. argh!)

Cheers!

MissPrism: You have joined a VERY distinguished club - but not very exclusive since z/s mocks just about everyone.

After e-mails back and forth w/ B1 we decided a couple of weeks ago to each refund $35 just to get D off our backs. D is a friend of B1's and while I never need to see her, B1 does. So we just decided to send the $$ and be done w/ it. B2 never said for sure if she would pay the $ or not but B1 would try to talk her into it.

I sent her the 2nd check on the 30th - didn't get an acknowledgment of either one. (I sent a nice note w/ the earlier refund of the B&B deposits -- but this check, I just placed in the envelope w/ "1/3 car rental" on the memo line . . . maybe just a bit passive/aggressive on my part )

Anywho . . . Last night I received an e-mail - case now closed >

"I want to thank you for getting the refunds from the B & B's. I am sure that was probably a big pain for you. I do appreciate it.
After much consideration about the car rental, I have decided to tear up your check. I tore B1's check up and told her to tell B2 not to write one. Though it was decided to return my share, you all seemed to resist and resent it.
Sorry for all the bother
."

Don't know what I would do about this--I guess I would take the first paragraph at face value and accept the ending apology. Too bad she wrote the middle paragraph--a bit passive-aggressive maybe?

Anyway. glad to hear the ending to the saga.

Just shaking my head.

Yes, janisj, I think she beat you out on the "passive/aggressive meter".

OK, so a while back Janis posted >

And yes, the event was a wonderful day, and worth a visit for anyone in the area in future years.

Here's a 7 minute video which pretty much sums up what went on, though the reality of being there was SO much better and SO much more fun! The Body Art was amazing, but just being in the beautiful old village with 400 year old houses and the churchyard with 99-100 yew trees, a church tower with shell holes from the Civil War, and ancient graves which people sit and stand on, terrific live music in various locations, and then these incredible costumes and body art is a situation which shouldn't work, but somehow just does...

PS Glad everything eventually worked out Janis, hope your ankle is healing well now and you are back to full mobility. Come and see me again for the ACP Festival!

janisj - I have been out of commission for a time so just back to reading the board and planning our next trip to the UK. Enjoyed your trip report. Over the years, many things you've done seem to foreshadow my own adventures, as we've discussed - but in this case I had a trip something like yours many years ago. In the group were me, my mom, my sister and my friend. What a bloody nightmare. Deep down I still haven't forgiven my sister. It had many of the same ingredients as your trip, tantrums, heels, driving nightmares, strange eating and sleeping habits, backseat hysterics, angry exchanges afterwards etc. There were no broken limbs although my friend would sleepwalk at night and tried to choke my sister. I sympathized with her. I think she was acting out what my mom and I were subconsciously planning. I've thought about that trip many times over the years and have concluded that a) you don't really know anyone - even if you are related to them - until you travel with them b) you change the family/friendship dynamic when you are the boss/tour guide/expert, no matter how much you like people c) few people in my circle of friends, family and acquaintances are as intensely interested in England as I am and no matter what feats of planning I pull off they won't get it d) what doesn't kill us makes us stronger and e) I have an ever-expanding repertoire of great stories to tell at cocktail parties, family bbqs (when my sister isn't there) and on Fodor's.

Hope your ankle is healing. And know that a lot of people here would give their next pension cheque to have you plan and execute a trip for them.

LOL -

"few people in my circle of friends, family and acquaintances are as intensely interested in England as I am and no matter what feats of planning I pull off they won't get it "

It may be that we make it too easy for them and they think its no big deal??? Like great actors - it doesn't look like we are doing anything . . .

Ankle is much better - thanks. Still the occasional twinge/tweak but last week I managed to walk around the State Fair for about 4 or 5 hours.

rickmav - I feel your pain. In an excess of filial affection DH and I took my mother on holiday for a week a few years ago. How stressful could a week in Holland seeing the tulips be? What a nightmare - between them DH and DM had me worn to a frazzle.

it's lucky that guns are illegal here or i might have been tempted to finish them both off.
