My husband and I are flying into Munich for our honeymoon next week- we are in dire need of advice on sites NOT to miss around the city and in nearby countries, as well as what to expect weather wise. We booked a car rental and are not sure if this is such a good idea. We are staying at the Kempinski in the city. Any day trip suggestions and hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you don't know what you want to see and do in Munich, then why are you going? Questions like these are so inane.

First of all, take lots of warm clothing and an umbrella! Second, train travel in Germany is fantastic, and you can get just about anywhere by train. If you are planning to stay in one place the whole time you are there, you may not need a car. On the other hand, if you are the kind of people who love to just get in a car and go, who love to discover things on yor own, then a car is just the thing, The roads are excellent -- but they drive very fast! <BR> <BR>Day trips from Munich should include: <BR>Nuremberg <BR>Neuschwanstein Castle <BR>Any place in the Bavarian Alps <BR> <BR>The Kempinski is a fine hotel. The concierge should be a big help. They will have all kinds of information and tours on offer. Do yourself a favor. Take advantage of their services. <BR> <BR>Happy Honeymoon!

The Deutsches Museum if you are at all interested in science and technology, the Alte Pinakothek if you're an art lover.The Asam church- just because it's interesting. A day trip to Linderhof castle would be spectacular. <BR>Driving is easy in Germany if you have a map, but make sure you know the names of the little towns around where you are trying to go. And stay on the right on the autobahn, unless you want to pass. Many sights in Munich itself are easier to get to on foot, in fact, much is pedestrians only.

Amanda: prepare yourself for a treat in one of the most wholesome European cities. Apart from the museums listed by Nickie, stroll along the Pedestrian Zone, don't miss the Marienplatz, and treat yourself to the open market (Viktualienmarkt) - all within walking distance. Your best choice while in town is to walk, walk, and walk. Check out the official site at www.muenchen.de, they list everything there including day trips.

You're going on your honeymoon and you don't even know what's there? I hope you're a lot more careful with your family planning. By the way, sex can lead to children.

Someone mentioned Ludwig II Linderhof. In that genaral area are also Garmish, Oberammergau, Neuswanstein. Another day trip would be Salzberg, one of the most charming cities that you could ever see. <BR>Have a great trip. <BR>

You can get anywhere from Munich by train. Cancel the car (although it is fun to speed along on the autobahn). I like Rothenburg. Dachau is a stirring destination. Don't froget the bierhalls. Augustiner is my favorite, but be sure to visit hofbrauhaus, if for no other reason than to see your fellow countrymen making asses out of themselves. If you decide to drive you may want to head up the Romantic Road, which is a series of gingerbread-like towns. Have lots of fun.

ignore the obnoxious comments from the peanut gallery. <BR>my top picks in munich-- <BR>--Hofbrauhaus restaurant <BR>--BMW museum <BR>--Schloss Nymphenburg (sp?) <BR>--Crazy King Ludwig's castles--Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schwangau, Chiemsee <BR>--Marienplatz <BR>My favorite city in all of Germany is Hamburg--really pretty. If you have time, hit Austria--it's an hour away by train, Innsbruck is just 2 hours away. Small towns in the Arlberg are delightful. Stay away from Kaprun.

Hello! Lately the highs have been around 45 and lows around freezing. Yesterday it rained but today it's just dreary. Forecast for Sunday is for snow or rain. It gets dark by 5:30 so expect short days! <BR>You definitely don't need a car in the city and can easily do without one altogether but it might be fun for touring the countryside. <BR>Stuff to see in Munich: Asamkirche, Viktualienmarkt, the pedestrian area around Marienplatz, English garden (especially nice if there's snow). <BR>Outside of Munich: Neuschwanstein castle, Linderhof castle, Herrenchiemsee Palace (on Herren Insel in the Chiemsee lake), the Königsee, Salzburg, Innsbruck...

No one asked how long you will be in Germany. The trip to Hamburg that someone recommended is a little off the track from Munich. <BR> <BR>Weather will be cold. I always pull out my long johns for winter trips and they work great. Also prepare for some rain anytime you go to Germany. <BR> <BR>After seeing the sites of Munich and you want to see out of the town I would first head to Garmisch. Not that bad a drive and I would stay at least one night so you can visit Linderhof castle, Garmisch town, Oberammergau and Ettal Abbey, Neuschwanstein, Wies church. This is a beautiful area. <BR> <BR>Second choice from Munich would be the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area. Again, I would spend the night so you can truly enjoy the area. No one mentions the fact that the roads can get crowded as they do in the US. The day trips by car sound nice, but not if you spend all day in the car and then have to reverse your trip. It does happen. <BR> <BR>Dachau, while interesting, is not something to see on your honeymoon.Save it for another trip. <BR> <BR>Munich also has a great subway system. Get someone to show you how to use it and then use it. It is very clean and nice. <BR> <BR>Third choice from Munich base, and one of our favorite touristy towns to hit, is Rothenburg. Fun walking city, but you should try to hit the BIG TWO in the Alps....Garmisch and Berchtesgaden, if this your first trip to the area. <BR> <BR>Any other questions, email me.
