First Trip to Italy
My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy in April 2004. We are interested in the following cities/areas but need help planning the order in which to visit them. We plan to fly in to one city, take trains between our cities of interest and then fly home out of our last city. Please give us some ideas so we can at least book our tickets.....Thanks! We want to visit:
Rome, Florence, Sienna, Cinqua Terra, Venice
What order is best to visit these places and how many days/nights in each is realistic?

Here's an answer that might seem unorthodox:
Fly into Florence (possible by connecting in Paris, or other gateway cities) - - stay four nights, one of which is day-tripping to Siena (by bus).
Then to the Cinque Terre for two nights, returning to Florence, for the 95 minute train ride onward to Rome.
Four nights in Rome.
Then (and yes, I understand that this is backtracking some) - - a 4 hour train ride for 2 or 3 nights in Venice.
Fly home.
One man's opinion.
Best wishes,
Rex

My husband and I are planning a similar trip in May 2004 and it is our first trip to Europe/Italy. I have been researching this forum (and love it!) for hours on end, including postings back to 2001. We have finally landed on the following:
Rome - 4 nights
Siena - 1 night with a tour of Chianti the following day
Florence - 4 nights - possible daytrip to Pisa/Lucca
Venice - 3 nights
Since we used miles to fly business class, we are flying in and out of London (and spending 4 nights there at the end of our trip). We are flying directly to Rome when we arrive in London and flying from Venice back to London. We will travel by train/bus within Italy.
Good luck with your planning! I will follow this post to see the advice you get!

We went to similar locations on our trip last year. We started in Venice (actually took a train from Zurich to Venice via Milan), took Eurostar to Rome, then to Florence, and finally Cinque Terre. It's a nice "V" and the trains were great.
We loved every part of our trip, but especially Venice and Cinque Terre.
Can't wait to go again...
