First trip to Europe
My husband and I are going to a wedding in Prague this June. We will have 7 days left after visiting Prague and want to go to other countries but we don't have any idea of where we should go. We'd love some suggestions. We have been thinking about Salzburg and/or Cinque Terre. Please help us(we are clueless)!!

Yes, Rex's route would be very interesting, but you might run into areas where little or no English is spoken - so if that is important then places more on the usual tourist track could be easier.

Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest, Basel, a tour or cruise on the Danube or Rhine? Maybe leave Italy until you have more than 7 days?

Salzburg is cute but I can't see spending more than a day there. Munich is close by train from Salzburg or you could shoot through the Alps and hit Northern Italy - Verona, Venice.

I would save the Cinque Terre to do with the rest of the Italian Riviera.

Vienna and Budapest come to mind because they are similar yet very different from Prague. Vienna is about a 5-hour train ride from Prague and Budapest is about 3 hours further south. Both cities are interesting and have lots to see and do. Otherwise, I would go north to Berlin (4 1/2-hour train ride), maybe stopping in Dresden/Meissen (about halfway). Berlin is a favorite city of mine with so much to see and do and so much history. You could take day trips into the German countryside, up to the seashore or into Poland.

Let's back this one up a little. Where are you flying to and from?
That will make a difference.
If you go anywhere from Prague by rail, allow plenty of time. Czech trains are creepers of the slowest order, in my opinion. Prague to Budapest is 7 hours.
Prague to Vienna is about 4 hours 45 minutes shortest travel time.
Munich is about 7 hours away best time, with no direct connections and no really convenient schedule. You either early, or arrive very late.
