First-Time Travel to Normandy

My wife and I are spending a week in Paris during May, and we are planning to take a train up to the Calvados coast for a few days.

I would like to experince as much of the coast area as possible, but my main goal is to visit the D-Day memorials.

Can anyone suggest a good hotel/Inn in the Arromanches, Courseulles, Port-en Bessin area for a few nights, and some good restaurants as well. I know this isn't nearly enough time to tour the area, but any help will be greatly appreciated.

JoeGee, New Jersey

Hi JoeGee:
My husband and I are travelling to this area this summer for the first time to visit the Canadian landing beaches in and around Juno Beach. We have booked a few nights at the Clos Normand Hotel in St Aubin sur mer which looks to be just a few kilometres from Courseulles sur mer.
This hotel was recommended to us by another Fodorite a few months back. It isn't particularly inexpensive but it looks wonderful. It is right on the beach. Check out their site at www.closnormandhotel.com.
Even if you don't choose to stay at this hotel apparently their restaurant is an experience as well according to some others I heard back from.
Enjoy your trip.
Regards,
Lynn

There is a Colonel Chilcott who runs a B&B and conducts private tours of the battle areas. I have heard only nice things about this man and his hospitality. It is where I plan to stay on my next trip to Normandy. his e-mail address is [email protected]
Enjoy Normandy.
I highly recommend Col Chilcott. We stayed there last fall for four nights. His wife is delightful. It is sorta rural but an easy walk to town. The rooms are very big.

We just got back from a Normandy trip.
We stayed outside of Bayeux in a 15th Century manor that used to be a military compound in the 100 years war. It was called Hotel du Carel, and we found it in Fodors. I highly recommend it. Our room was quite small, but charming. There are only 4 rooms or so, plus a cottage, but the other rooms seemed to be a bit larger, one with a fireplace. Breakfast was well done. The manor is really unique, and the proprietors were really helpful.
