Hello! I will be visiting Paris for the first time this fall with my girlfriend. Does anyone have any suggestions for a hotel? Some info:
- I'll be there for two nights, and try to take in the major sites.
- Budget is between $125-$200US a night.
- Would like a hotel near public transportation
- Would like a nice atmosphere ... not too loud, but a good respresetation of Paris life

Hi- we are going to Paris for the first time this week so cannot fully answer your question (just yet).

However, we are staying at the Hilton Paris and the feedback I received from other fodorites has indicated that this is in a relativly quiet neighborhood very near the Eiffel Tower.... we are only there for a short time as well.

If you type 'paris hotel' into the search window on this page, you will get a ton of info. Your question is a common one, and there is a nice slectionof recommended hotels that would fit your bill.

The nice thing about central Paris is that you are never a long walk from the Metro. The Metro/RER/bus system is very extensice. So that's the good news about location. Personally, I like to be able to walk to the main sites, with option to Metro back at end lof long day of touring.

As a swag, I would recommend the Ile St Louis area (island in Seine, across form Notre Dame), hotels there are Deux Iles and Lutece. Nice neighbourhood, 5 minute walk to Metro, nice restos around.

Second choices are Hotel De Notre Dame and Hotel Le Notre Dame. The "De" hotel is on a nice one way street on Left Bank, 1/2 block from Seine and views of Notre Dame, plenty of shops and restos....some nice ones along the Seine in this area.

The "Le" is one the Left Bank also, on the street running above the Seine, very near St Michel RER. If you get a street side room (we had the loft), you look out and see Notre Dame cathedral.

I would recommend looking for hotels in the Latin Quarter, the Marais, St. Germaine, and the Ile St. Louis. They're beautiful, charming neighborhoods that felt very "Parisian" to me when I went there for the first time two years ago, and they're very centrally located to the sites you'll likely want to see: Notre Dame, the Louvre, the Conciergerie, etc. Plus they're full of great little restaurants and bars.

I went to Paris with my wife in April this year. We stayed at TimHotel Tour Eiffel and we were happy with that. The main thing is to stay close to a metro station so that you can get around. Get in touch if you have any questions.

travelnut has given you some excellent resources. I personally like the Hotel Du Danube in St. Germain. The upper end of your price range will buy a room in their superior catagory. The hotel is not air-conditioned but that should not be a problem in the fall. A courtside room will allow you to open windows without having a noise problem should you need to. The street, Rue Jacob, is historic (the treaty of Paris was signed next door)has charm and is only a few streets from Pont Neuf. Good shops and plenty of atmospheric restaurants are nearby. My own experience with hotel staff was very positive. You can Google Hotel du Danube for their website to see if the decor suites you.

I would just like to give props to Jaylaveglia for being nice (not snippy) when it was suggested he/she read previous posts.
