FIrst time in Italy for ten days...advice on our plans?
My husband and I ( 50,s) are going to Italy for ten days on October 11. I have booked the Residenza San Pantaleo in Rome for three nights and then we are renting a car to go north to the Tuscany region. We are staying at Casa Portagioia in Castiglion Fiorentino for 5 nights and plan to explore the region from there. We plan to take a day trip by train to Florence during that time. This is our first trip to Europe, but after reading all your stories I know it won't be our last, so I'm not worried about fitting everything into this one trip, but I want to make the best use of our time there. I know we will return to Rome, so we only will visit the popular sites in our three days( and EAT and DRINK!). Do you have any suggestions for day trips from our place in Tuscany? Also, we need to rent a car in Rome to drive north......where is the best place to rent? It will be on a Sunday. Should we instead take a train north and rent a car there? Any ideas or advice about anything will be greatly appreciated!

One note - just be sure the rental offices are open on Sunday on the hours you need.
(Unlike the US many things in europe are not open all days at all hours - they vary a lot - and often not in any discernable pattern.)

Mlou - there are some wonderful scenic drives and day trips described on the slowtrav website. One that is really special is driving the cypress roads and going to the S'ant Antimo Abbey to hear the gregorian chanting.
See the website below and look under "Pauline's notes" at the middle of the page.

I'm a fan of gemut.com, having used them on a recent trip to Italy. They happened to use Auto Europe for my trip, but use all the major providers, and talk to you (a LIVE person!!) about the trip and have lots of good advice.
