Hey Everyone,

Loving all the suggestions although they seem to be making me more nervous than I was. I love driving so I'm sure it'll be fine. I just need to make a decision.

RE: Pick up at the Marble Arch. Isn't that in London? Would that be high traffic.

Basically, the gist seems to be that I should rent from a bigger town but try to find an agency on the outskirts and stay away from B roads.

Can I do that and stll see the countryside?

The poor Brits. To think they have to deal with tourists like me all the time.

Marble Arch is in London. On a Sunday traffric won't really be a problem. Weekdays, especially during rush hour, could present a problem. Oxford Road/Bayswater turns into the A40 so it's a pretty straight shot. Not sure I'd do it my first time driving unless it was a Sunday morning.

Don't worry about the B roads as mentioned in another post they can be as good or even better than some A roads. All depends.

Several have suggested Oxford as a possible pick-up point, and that's fine too as long as you adhere to flanners advise and rent from one of the agencies located further from the town centre. You do not want to be driving through Oxford!

I believe Kidlington (Hertz) was another suggestion being a short cab ride from Oxford.

Yes, during the week, but it really is a short distance to the motorway.

We picked up our car on a Saturday morning and there was very little traffic.

karbop1, most, if not all, B roads are fine. C roads can be a bother because many in spots have room for only one vehicle.

You say "we". "We" should be prepared to remind you of staying on the correct side of the road, help with the routes and roundabouts and be an extra pair of observant eyes.

You will make mistakes so be very aware of your surroundings.
