First solo trip to Paris, February
Hello and thanks in advance for any help. I will be traveling to Russia for work and am planning to stop over in Paris on the way home. Either four or five nights, early February. Would love recommendations for hotels (would prefer to spend less than $250 US per night), restaurants that are good for solo diners, and anything else I might need to know regarding Paris in February. I speak a bit of French and will use it as much as I can.
Hotels I'm currently looking at include the Residence Henri V and the Hotel College de France. I am usually pretty comfortable in new cities as long as I have a good map, and after Russia, Paris might seem balmy enough for long walks...

Hi DA,
We always stay at the Hotel Bonaparte, 61 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th. From 131E dbl w/bkfst. It is just around the corner from Place St. Sulpice, near 3 metro stops and 4 bus routes. Has AC and an elevator.
The staff speaks English well, and is very helpful.

I've had great luck with Abbatial @ 46 Rue St. Germain and also at Familia a couple of blocks away--farther from the Seine by a couple of blocks, but costs less. Both are near the Metro and within walking distance of many sights.

There are a million opinions on where to stay in Paris. I go there by myself frequently. It is a city where I find solo traveling to be easy.
I am a fan of the 7th. There are many great hotels in the area that fit your budget needs and all are very close to the Metro; The Hotel Le Walt, the Hotel du Cadran, Hotel de Tourville. Hotel Latour Maubourg, The Muguet, Hotel le Bosquet. I have stayed at all of them, none have restaurants but cafes and restaurants are right outside the door. The Le Walt and Bosquet would be my first and second choices.
In February expect temps ranging from the 20's to 40's, with possible snow. But you're right in thinking that it will be the Bahamas compared to Russia.

www.dacia-luxembourg-paris.com is a nice place we stayed that's right on St Mich Blvd in the Latin Quarter, easily in that price range.
I'm also very interested in those few hotels located on the island in the Seine, but just from photos and articles about the area.
Traveling solo I think the 7th might also be nice for being a bit more residential and less hectic than the more central areas of teh 4th/5th/6th.

Le Petit Lutetia is a wonderful French bistro in the 7th, near all the places that posters have already recommended.
Typical art nouveau decor and a lovely staff (friendly and not bad looking either
)
I am a fan of having lunch at some of the more celebrated tea shops, my favorite being the upstairs dining room of Laduree, Rue Royale location.
Have fun!

DebbieAllen,
I was a big fan of the movie, Fame, back in the days. Well, later for that.
I am also a fan of the 7th (although I love the 6th as well). I stayed at the Hotel Duquesne Eiffel a few months ago and loved it. Close to metro & buses, views of Eiffel Tower from your balcony if you're lucky.
It seems they are charging lower than your budget right now (I paid around 200 euros a night, prices appear to be lower for February).
Rooms are very clean & staff is friendly. Free internet access in the lobby.

Enjoy your trip!

DebbiAllen, did you mean the Residence Henri V, or actually the Residence Henri IV? We stayed at the latter some years ago and loved it, for various reasons: 1) our room had a little kitchenette so we could have coffee and tea, cereal and milk, and the even take-out in the room, 2) it's on a very quiet side street, 3) it's in a terrific neighborhood -- not only close to some of the tourist attractions (about 5 blocks from Notre Dame, for ex.), but also a couple of blocks from wonderful markets, restaurants, shops, metro, etc.

For restaurants i would go to "a l angle du faubourg" (it is part of Taillevent) in the 8th or to Au Souffle (all the courses are souffles!) in the 1st
I would not recommend staying in hotels. I d rather rent a flat. You feel more parisian. I booked through http://www.rentalsineurope.com
They have english speaking staff

Hi,
You have received a lot of good advice.
I go to Paris regularly, alone. I prefer the 7th. I stay for a month, so I do rent apartments.
You will find that the 7th has far more great restaurants than you begin to have time for. I would definitely suggest the Christian Constant restaurants..a ll 4 of them on St. Dominique. Cafe Constant, Les Cocottes, Violon d'Ingres and Fables de la Fontaine. Every price range for excellent food.
Enjoy your planning...

Dear Debbie Allen,
I've travelled alone to Paris and was very comfortable staying in the 7th. I've stayed at the Hotel Beaugency and Hotel Europe, they are both fine, however the Beaugency was nicer. If I go back to Paris I would like to stay at Hotel de Varenne it's also in the 7th; I took a quick look my last trip and I really liked it.
Bon voyage.

bookmarking--thinking of doing this in May. Debbie, I've traveled to France solo, but never to Paris (just through it). I found it very comfortable to dine by myself most places. I look forward to reading about your adventures.
