Thanks - I guess I just need to decide if time or money is more important...
ky, I think it will be a combination of train and bus. Bus all the way down from Rome seems very long, and taxi is expensive. This trip is definitely more expensive than our average ones, so we will try to keep cost down where possible. Plus, I am not expecting cheap airfare either...

Alternatively, you can train from Rome to Salerno and then ferry from Salerno to Positano. Arriving from the sea is a wonderful way to see Pos and the coast.
Pos is one of my favorite spots in Italy, so I would take a day from Capri and add it to Pos.
You will not be rushed seeing Amalfi and Ravello in the same day. Take the first ferry to Amalfi, then take the bus (or taxi) directly up to Ravello. Wander around for a couple of hours (Villa Ruffalo only took us about 30 minutes to explore) and have lunch (recommend Cumpa Cosima), then take the bus back down to Amalfi and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Amalfi. You can either take the last ferry from Amalfi back to Pos (around 6:00) or stay later and take the last SITA bus back to Pos.
One of our favorite days we spent during our week in Pos was on Laurito Beach - we took the little shuttle boat and spent a couple of hours lounging in the sun and then had a wonderful lunch at Da Adolfo in our swimsuits.

Ohhh, I like that!
Between bus and boat/ferry, there is no question in my mind, any water transportation wins.
Thanks for all the restaurant recommendations, noted them all. Good to know that Amalfi + Ravello can be combined in 1 day only

Just be sure you get a train that arrives in Salerno in time to catch the last ferry to Pos (currently scheduled to leave at 3:30). Also, be sure to book a train that goes direct from Rome to Salerno - not one that stops in Naples (non-stop is IMHO always a better option if the price difference isn't too crazy).
You may find that once you get to Pos you become immersed in the relaxed "southern Italy" vibe and are suddenly more concerned with relaxing than with running around on day trips. Or at least that was my experience!

ekc,
Thanks a lot - I need to compare time and $$ for various transfer options, and based on that I will decide the order of places to stay in. I will assume that May 2013 boat schedules will be the same in 2014...if not, we'll figure a plan B.

It happened to us, too...and that was fine. Actually, it was great
I like having things to do planned, but if we don't get to do them, it's always for a better alternative, so no complaint.
