Venice has the Festa del Redentore (July 15-16). It "commemorates the end of a 16th-century plague that killed about 47,000 city residents. Venetians take to the water to watch fireworks at midnight, but if you can't find a boat the Giudecca is the best place to be. Young folks traditionally greet sunrise on the Lido beach while their elders attend church."

I second the Festival dei Due Mondi, Spoleto. It's excellent and highly regarded internationally. They have chamber music, opera, dance, visual arts, drama, cinema. It's pretty amazing. One of my favorite string quartets, Rossetti String Quartet, will be performing there July 11.
