Ferry from Ancona to Split
Hi,
My husband and I are traveling to Croatia at some point during our 2 month European sojourn beginning mid July and I was curious about taking the ferry from Ancona, Italy to Split, Croatia. Let me preface this by saying that my husband gets somewhat seasick. Therefore, I am wondering how rocky the adriatic sea will be in July/August? Does anyone have any first hand experience with this trip? Also, it seemed fairly expensive. I found a website that listed it as 187 Euros one way for 2 people. Does that seem expensive? Also, do you think we'd be better off renting a car in Venice area and driving there instead? Sorry for the longwinded posting.

We took the ferry last year, to Zadar..and rented out car there so we could take in then Plitvice Lakes first before heading south to Trogir, Split and Dub. The ferry is comfortable, rooms are more than adequate...we paid 150 E's for two, one way...but we got off at Zadar.
Breakfast is served...and the trip was quite smooth (April). Where are you renting a car? In Split?

The Adriatic crossing is smooth as glass.
You may save a few bucks by booking an "interior" cabin (i.e., no portholes). For a sleeping cruise, it's just as well.
The ferries from Bari sail direct to Dubrovnik through the end of September, and also direct to Montenegro (and Greece).

They are big ships and the Adriatic is very unlikely to be rough in July.
There are two companies, Blue Line (www.bli-ferry.com) and Jadrolinija (www.jadrolinija.hr). Mid-July is the start of the peak season, so you'll pay the top fare. All the ships have bars, a restaurant and cabins. Jadrolinija's cabin passengers get a simple breakfast included in the fare. Both companies have some sailings to other ports, including Hvar, Vis, Korcula and Zadar.

For about that same price - maybe less - you can take the high speed ferry from Ancona to Split. http://www.viamare.com/SNAV-ancona-split.html# It leaves daily at 11:00 arriving in Split about 15:30.
