Actually my favorite experience was driving the Mosel. It flows into the Rhone at Koblenz and is prettier and more laid back than the Rhine. Cuter villages too. Oh, and it has Burg Eltz, a really good castle.

i also drove the mosel for two days alone, and found the greatest guesthouse on road to burg eltz. don't recall the name, but i was following signs to burg eltz and came across this fabulous clean place.

fine room, good food, great breakfast, and they had stabling for horses.

maybe someone else can get you the name.

i had no trouble finding nice places to stay. i went off the main road into the hills, and quickly found a lot to choose from.

I suggest you take the A-61 autobahn from Cologne to Koblenz, and then get down to the river, and head south on the road on the western bank of the river far as you think you can handle that day. Return to Cologne by way of the A-61, which runs very close to the Rhein, so the distance between the road along the Rhein and the autobahn is at the most 14km.

The pretty part of the Rhein is actually a relatively short stretch (50km)between Koblenz and Bingen.

An option is to cross the river at Bingen and return on the eastern bank of the river.

I agree with another posting that the Mosel is pretty as well.

I was speaking with a tourist from S. America, who was intent on seeing some particular altar or stained glass window in a church in Koblenz. I do not know what it was, but it sounded as if he was going to go way out of his way just to see this particular attraction. If anyone knows what it was, let me know please.
