Just pick one--Crime and Punishment - For those who know some Russian, take a look at the roots of the character names and see how Dostoevsky was influenced by Dickens.
As a kid, and probably read the most times - Lad, A Dog by Albert P. Terhune.
In High School, The Autobiography of Lincoln Steffens.
Also, pretty much anything by Hubert Selby Jr. IMHO one of the greatest of American writers. Last Exit to Brooklyn is one powerful piece of writing. However, the movie version was awful.

Anthony Powell's Dance to the Music of Time--12 books that cover about a 50 year period. I believe the books were divided up into Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer.
John Fowles French Lieutenant's Woman, all of Jane Austen, Bridehead Revisted and all of Waugh's other books. I also really enjoyed EJ Howard's Cazalet series.

You are so right, Travelerjan - and
I am so wrong - of course EJ Howard
could not possibly be Martin's mater! I mythed by a mile! He IS
a piece of work, isn't he? LOL!
I have also enjoyed most of Mary
Wesley's books. "Somewhat" similar.
And, of course, Dorothy Dunnett.

macdogmom--the Anthony Powell books used to be divided into Spring, Summer, Fall and winter but recent editions have First Movement, second Movement, etc. I have been rereading Dance to the Music of Time 30 years after I first read this cycle
i will have to try the Cazalet books--you and I have very similar tastes
Underhill--Rumer godden is an author I have always enjoyed but few people seem to read her now. China Court is my favorite
