Marie:
We're flying AA too, and fiends highly recommended we bring our own food.

If the (B) is prepackaged we'll wait until we land at CDG to get breakfast.

How is the food on British Airways?

I was very happy with the food on KLM...totally great!!

But the food on NW was....well...it left a lot to be desired considering I had to pay a buck to have some trail mix.

I always think of Julia Childs's favorite sandwich for the airplane, peanut butter and banana on wheat bread. It lasts very nicely.

We bring Pringles chips in the tube-crushproof and the remaining chips stay fresh for later consumption. If travelling with our kids we throw in some of those instant noodle meals that come in styrofoam cups and ask the cabin staff for some boiling water to make up.These have been our saviour on long flights with picky eaters who do not like airline food.Rather than seeming irritated by being asked for the neccesary boiling water I have been complimented by cabin crew who thought it was a great idea for travelling with kids!

As a frequent no-frills airline flyer, where you're lucky to pay 5 euro for an awful sandwich, I now take along sushi and a bottle of water. I get a lot of envious glances, particularly when I then get out my portable DVD player (best purchase ever).

Venezzia; KLM food is generally not bad at all.

I never used to bring any food on the plane; the less to carry the better, but then we were on a transatlantic flight that took more than twice as long as normal, due to weather, plane diverted to other airport, then again to another airport, and we could not leave the plane for the entire time, 18 hours or so. The food and drinks ran out long before we could get off the plane. When we finally got off at DC after midnight, all food shops were closed there.
So now I always pack some granola bars and water!

If you are flying on a U.S. airline to Europe, bring red wine in a coke bottle or white wine in a sprite bottle since they charge $5 for those little bottles. "And be quite about it!!! It is illegal."

I won't bring anything that smells (no hot food), nor will I bring anything that might give me gas. I like to bring my own alcohol in a small flask (Havana club rum is my favorite trip drink), fresh pineapple, chocolate (I always crave it during the trip) and a really perfect sandwich. Normally, though, I end up snacking on it in the airport and then, once I am on the plane, promptly fall into a drugged sleep that lasts the flight. When waiting for a taxi, though, sometimes it is nice to have a little rum leftover.

birthdaygirlstrip- I usually fly British Air overnight to London. Their food (and timing of service) is really very good. And I love those seatback entertainment screens.

Must agree with British Airways. They had the best Chocolate Cheesecake on my last flight. And I was in economy. And thirds on wine after dinner. And the seatback entertainment. She had nice . . .

i usually get a baguette w/ham and an orangeina when coming back from paris. (even though they do feed you) it's a good idea, a couple of times the dish i would have ordered was not available, or for any other reason...this past summer on a flight san diego-new york
i bought a salad and thought i was pretty smart! until i realized shortly after take off i did not bring a plastic fork and i knew the airline (jet blue) did not have a fork of any kind. i picked at the salad with my hands! and that's just for starters...the flight got diverted to atlantic city, arrived ny 2 hours later, 45 minute line for a cab at jfk...etc...etc...

Flying AerLingus this summer for the first time. Soda bread and a boiled potato??? I can't believe all the carrot sticks and grapes you all bring with you! Everyone knows that a 1 pound bag of peanut M&M's is required eating when floating over an ocean with nothing but air between you and certain death!

DejaVu, I am eating one of those RIGHT NOW !!!

I always bring a big (1 ltr) bottle of water with me. It's usually empty by the end of the flight (I drink all day anyhow at work).

I also bring lasting snacks -- the aforementioned chewy granola bars (carbs for good sleep plus a choco fix), and perhaps something salty like cashews. Dried fruit possible. If it is a late flight leaving (i.e., after 7pm for overseas) I try to eat at the airport while waiting to board.

I'm flying Virgin trans-Atlantic in two months, and have heard their food is better than the normal fare. I know British Air's is, I've been impressed with them in the past. AA was OK, US Air and NW were forgettable.

Thanks, Calla & DiG--I will definitely bring some snacks and water. Calla, do you know how/why you got upgraded? I would love to get lucky like that.

P.S. Were you dressed nicely? I've heard that helps.

well. no.. not particularly nicely dressed. It really was a complete suprise. I had asked for aisles across and the ticket agent wasnt particularly nice. She never looked up or smiled. It seemed that I was annoying her. When I walked away and looked at my boarding pass, the seats were B and D (or something like that) and I thought she put us in Middle seats apart... but lo and behold - she had upgraded us. I waited for them to tell us to move, but it never happened. I'm sure it was some kind of freakish miracle and will not expect it to happen again. .. but it was nice to have the couple of extra inches of legroom.

1travelbug I thought I was the only one who brought twizzlers on my flights to Europe. I think this is one of my must haves on a trip.

I aslo bring bottled water, crackers, and hard candy.
