fashion in Prague?
My husband and I will be vacationing in Prague this October. I was wondering what to wear for typical autumn weather in the Czech Republic. But I also wanted to know what is the current fashion so that I blend in with the locals. Can my husband get by with jeans and khakis?

Kelli,

The weather can be cool and may be wet, so a jacket and umbrella should definitely be taken along. We were there in November and although it was very dry, the mornings and evenings were very chilly. We needed gloves and hats and warm coats.

A lot of attention is going into what to wear and I guess that I don't get it. No matter what you have on, Americans are very easy to spot by most Europeans. The maps, cameras and language will point you out right away.

I dress exactly as I do at home no matter where we go in Europe, South America, whatever. Casual (and comfortable) during the day and maybe a little dressier in the evening depending on our plans. Some places, like churches, theaters and restaurants have a dress code in parts of Europe, but I found nothing of the like in Prague.

I lived in Germany at one time and I could spot tourists no matter how well they tried to blend in. Since European countries have visitors from all over the world, it's common to see any variety of wardrobe anywhere.

We once saw a naked man walking down a busy street in Frankfurt. He didn't care much about blending in, I'll bet.

We were in Prague in the Spring and had beautiful weather just like the weather we left in Pa. The people dressed the same as anywhere. The young people were look alikes for our children. You see many people during the day in blue jean outfits, jeans with jackets. My husband wore kaki pants and did not feel uncomfortable day or night. We did not carry dressy clothes and were able to eat anywhere. Be comfortable and wear whatever you feel good in. As was said they will always know you are an American even by your haircut.

Hello, Kelli!
I was just in Prague. Lovely city! I have been taken as a local in many countries in Europe. I think it is my black hair and medium coloring. While in Prague, I wore my standard black dressier jeans and black tops. I included a bit of olive green and gold and sienna tones in my accent pieces and scarves. Minimize the expensive looking jewelry, and wear comfortable leather shoes. I carry a leather purse, but keep valuables in a money belt. I dress like this at home, so I am wearing what I usually do. It is smart to try to blend in, however. Why make yourself a target for theft?
Be careful in the metro. I noticed several unsavory characters around.
The people in general are lovely. We enjoyed many evenings at the local restaurants (although a bit smoky!) where you will be seated with complete strangers. We spoke with many people and thoroughly enhoyed ourselves.
Have a wonderful trip!
Gigi
