Just a general statement in reference to the many shoe shops I have been in, in the UK (especially in the towns close to where I live) and on the continent. Black, black and more black shoes. Boooooorrrrrrring.

RE: travelfrown

Linen trousers? Don't be getting light in the loafers on us!

You must be a foreigner - all red blooded Americans know you got to wear badly faded and grease-stained blue jeans with workboots!

I knew the earlier tassle comment was a sign of serious trouble with you.

Travelsmile: I think some of the posters were having fun. If you have traveled extensively on your own in Europe, you know that comfort rules. You also know that you will be seen as a tourist no matter how well or how poorly you dress. You also know that there is no "uniform" that all Europeans wear: They wear a lot of the same things we do, depending on their activities, though in the major cities a lot of locals are going about their normal business and are dressed accordingly. If you aren't there for business, why dress for business? Also, many of the foot fashions in Europe are a bit odd to us. Just try finding some of those shoes over here. I'd dare to say that a workboot might even be considered fashionable in Europe, particularly if they resemble Doc Martins. If you are clinging to the myth that Europeans don't wear jeans, you are overdue for another visit. No one is suggesting looking like a slob, though that look too can be found in Europe.

Ah, Deglaze, the tassle is an honourable design, so fitting for day or evening wear. The boot, humbleness itself, with eyelets and rawhide laces, is just the very embodiment of crude thinking, and not american at all, except for those throwbacks who inhabit the woods.

Bitter, well said, well said. Thanks for the talk, and I shall leave you with it. Again, well said. I've not traveled in europe alone, they tend to keep me on a short leash and close to home.

RE travelfrown

My earlier posts were a bit of fun - its often all we have to do in the deep woods of the American heartland. The wife and I pick cotton and sell honey to yankee tourists so we can go to Europe and kick up our heels a bit.

I hope your posts were in jest also or you have a serious self-esteem problem. I loved the one about you not wanting to walk beside the folks that paid your way to Europe - American 12 and 13 year old kids often feel the same way about thier square parents.

LOL, all in fun, to be sure. Good luck with the cotton and honey, and enjoy the next trip. That was fun!

RE: travelsmile

I just hope angrybill wasn't serious. That ugly stuff ruins a lighthearted exchange real quick.

where are you going? we were just in N/Central Italy and you can wear almost anything you want, I'd say no tank tops on men or baseball caps. My hubby wore his white sneakers occassionally during hot days and it was fine and we did not feel odd. He wore his hiking boots with shorts the majority of the time and looked fine too (albeit better than just the sneakers!).

Talk about wanting to standout. You don't thnk I would draw attention to myself dressing like that? I would even add the tennis shoes and hat backwards to complete the outfit.

Bill's not angry, he's simply teasing. He probably wears tassle loafers from Broos Bros.

I'm angry for being teased while wearing those stupid loafers.

I used to put francs in my loafers when I went to Paris, but the social welfare system dropouts laying in the gutter used to try and steal them whenever I paused to shoot a roll or two of film.

That's probably because you glued them to the soles rather than sticking them in the slots up front!

RE: Intrepid

Now it all makes sense. But the pavement gets cold in Paris. I wear loafers with big holes in the soles so my kids can go to trade school and become meter maids in the big city.

Sneakers and work boots are an excellent combination. If anyone makes fun of his sneakers, he can change into his work boots and stomp on their feet.

Funny, funny posts! Degas strikes agian!

Eng: I have a Parisian friend who is as French as they can get - he sometimes wears white sneakers, so not all the white sneakered people are Americans. As others have repeatedly pointed out here, the key word is COMFORT! You'll be doing a lot of walking so take the most comfortable shoes you have.
Then, learn to say "hello, thank you, please" in the local language and say these words with a smile. If you do that, no one will care what color or kind of shoes you wear.

Enjoy your trip!
