Family planning trip to Germany, Austria and Czech Republic?
Family trip to Germany, Austria and Czech Republic?
Our flights are set into Frankfurt and out of Munich - we arrive August 1 and depart August 13. This trip is our 3rd European family vacation with our two sons: the Scholar (now age 17) and Lunatic Maximus (now age 14). Our sons are very interested in WW II History and castles. I know this is an ambitious trip and I truly wish I had a few more days, but after reading a few trip reports, these are the locations I would really like to visit. I look forward to your thoughts and suggestions:
Rothenburg - 2 nights
Prague - 3 nights
Cesky Krumlov - 1 night
Saltzburg - 2 nights
Fussen - 1 night
Munich - 3 nights
Thank you so much!

WW2 history - Nurnberg has what it calls the most intact relics of the Third Reich - the old Nazi parade grounds outside of town have recently been refurbished and there is the stadium with the box intact where Hitler famously reviewed zillions of goose-stepping troops and other relics there as well.
Two nights in Rothenburg is one night too many IMO - kids will be bored to death there I fear but you could use it as a base from which to day trip to nearby Nurnberg.
Are you traveling by car or train - trains go everywhere you are going and very frequently - if considering rail you may look into the Czech-Germany railpass that lets you just hop on any train practically in those two countries and also gets you to Salzburg, considered also to be a German station for rail purposes - a DB or German train station inside the Austrian Salzburg Hbf or main station. If doing train check out these IMO Wunderbar sites for planning - www.bahn.de - official German railways site for schedules and pricing to compare to a pass - www.budgeteuropetravel.cdom; www.seat61.com and www.ricksteves.com.
a great excursion from Salzburg goes by bus to the nearby Sound of Music land around Lake Wolfgang - drdamy Lake Wolfgang where you can ride boats or from St Wolfgang take a famous steam-powered train up a huge mountain.

Thank you. The two nights in Rothenburg include our day of arrival - the next day we could visit Nurmberg during the day and do the night watchman's tour that night.
We have always rented a car, but perhaps should look into touring by train on this trip. Overall, do you think the schedule is a good plan?

I think that overall the schedule looks good. And normally 2 nights in R would be too much, but as a first stop, I think it is fine - time to get oveer any jetlag and get your bearings.
And I would definitely go by train.
