evening vespers at San Anselmo in Rome
Has anyone ever been to the evening vespers at San Anselmo on the Aventine Hill? It is mentioned in my "around rome with kids" book and my son would like to go. But, I am afraid to plan the day around it only to find out that it isn't scheduled, or isn't worth it. (for what it's worth, I googled it and came up empty-handed). Thanks!!!!

Sant'Anselmo is the world headquarters of the Benedictine Order, residence of the Abbot Primate and a seat of a university (Philosophy and Theology). There is a resident community of monks there and they hold daily vespers, in Gregorian chant, at 7.15 pm, and everyone is welcome. It's much enlivened by the presence of students in term time (Oct-June) and by visiting groups. There is a simple website at http://www.osb-international.info/sa...gia/index.html, with some archive photos of recent celebrations.

To add to the above posts, I would say the Aventine Hill itself is a very nice part of Rome, much more peaceful than central Rome, there is a little park with good views of the city atop the hill. Churches to visit include St. Sabina, St. Alessio, St. Prisca, and although you can't visit the Knights of Malta, you can look through the peephole with a view of St Peter's dome.

I have no idea where you are leaving from to go there, but let's suppose it's from Via Veneto 30:
Departure from Vittorio Veneto (via),30
go to stop BARBERINI (MA)
- take Line No 95 (PARTIGIANI/FS)to 8 stops
get off at stop BOCCA DELLA VERITA'
- walk 850 metres
to Dei Cavalieri Di Malta (piazza),5
distance covered (metres) 3400 metres
(Buses do not go up onto/into the Aventine.)
You can look it all up at
