I have never been charged an ATM fee by any ATM in Europe, anywhere. I guess it can happen, especially at ATMs not owned by banks, but so far I've managed to avoid fees by sticking to bank ATMs, in a dozen countries. My primary ATM card is not Visa or Mastercard - it isn't a "debit" card, just an ATM card for my savings account.

I use bank ATMs as well, and I try to use them inside the actual bank or lobby when possible during hours the bank is open. I am sometimes charged a small fee.

That would be very unusual IME. Every fee I have ever been charged was by one of my own banks.

I work during bank hours. So I withdraw my money from outside, but being paranoid I check who is in the neighbourhood before doing so. My parano stops there.

Actually, you just pay with your CC in local scratch and it will convert that to dollars on your later bill.

Note also that ATMs are offering to do DCC and you should always decline and just take out the straight foreign bob.
