European-style yogurt available stateside?
Just got back from a 3 week trip to Paris and Italy and one of the most memorable gastronomical delights I enjoyed (don't laugh) was the local yogurt. Even the Danon branded yogurt there was better than that available in the states, but the local brands (can't remember the names) were delicious -- smooth, creamy, and not overly sweet like Danon and Yoplait here. Does anyone know of any similar brands that are available in the states and where I might find them? Thanks.

I think the problem with US yogurt is that the absence of fat creates an absence of flavor. In the west Mountain High and Alta Dena still make plain yougurt that is made from 2% milk, you can sweeten it to taste with fruit, honey, maple syrup. <BR>Another taste treat is yougurt cheese. Put two cups of yougurt in a cheesecloth bag, hang over a bowl and let it drain for at least 24hrs. You will have a soft fresh cheese, not unlike a fresh cream cheese. serve with fresh or dried fruit. At a beautiful sit down lunch at the Louvre I had this for the dessert course served with chopped dried fruit on a base of chestnut puree! So delish.

Indeed the difference nutritionally is that most yogurt in the US is no or low in fat. Most European yogurts are made from whole milk. Many health food stores actually sell whole milk type yogurt. In New England area, check out Whitneys yogurt! <BR>ellen

Yes, the fat is the difference! The only yogurt I've ever tasted stateside that even compared was a brand called Bon Lait, but I haven't seen it in any store for the past eight years. If you find it, try it, it's just like the European stuff (about 4% milkfat I think).

Try looking for Greek-style yogurt, maybe in a health food store. It is super thick (and probably fattening...) but delicious. Often it's made from sheep's milk. Stoneyfield Farms has the best yogurt I've ever tasted in the US (the wholemilk version seems to be available in healthfood stores only).

My kids and I really miss the yogurt drinks we had in England and Denmark. An American company (I forget which one) has come out with something similar but it comes in little teenie bottles and is SO expensive. In Europe you could get the stuff by the quart. It was great.
