I just read about this in the paper. I'll pass for now. I've two trips to plan and I don't feel like posting another clue.

Hint: Artist is not (Gerhard) Richter, as I thought initially.

I was sure you must have read this article.

If not one else answers it after a few days, you might as well post the answer. You can give away your right to post the next clue if you want to.

Actually I just happened to look at it online today. The article was published a few days ago.

When I looked at the clue last night, I discovered that Richter painted his father with a dog (I think). But I couldn't find a series of dog paintings. So guessing Richter did enable me to get part of the clue, but I think that it'd have taken me a long time if I hadn't stumbled upon the article.

I booked my hotel on PL in Chicago. I'm relieved.

Lump, Germany, Picasso, Barcelona (guess)

Someone can take the next clue. I do have another trip to plan.

Thanks.

I found an interesting clue to give.

Two artists are both known by this name (1st letter = c, 9 letters). One is the other's (type of relative: 5 letters). The first artist is more famous than the second and is known for painting views of (city: 6 letters). The second artist has painted a view of another city (7 letters).

Canaletto
The more famous one is the one who painted Venice.
The less famous one is pupil and nephew or the famous one. He painted Dresden.

(Funny - this came up during my recent trip)

Yes, that's right.

I've been researching Dresden. I didn't know about this. I was thinking "Hmm.... Canaletto painted a view of Dresden? That's interesting." Started Googling.

This city (9, "n" = 6) is the 4th largest city in this country (6). It has been named the 2008 (4 words: 8,7,2,7). One of the city's attraction is a museum dedicated to (matter: 3).

That would be Stavanger, which in 2008 will be the "European Capital of Culture". The 3-letter word might be 'art'.

I think it's oil -- not surprising, given Norway's reputation as oil producer.

Wiki on Stavanger lists a Norwegian Petroleum Museum there.

Harzer, you can take the clue, by the way.

harzar, you got it.

And yes 111op, I'm thinking of the Petroleum Museum, so the "matter" is oil indeed.

Back in 1989 Peter Mayle wrote a very well-received book called "A Year in Provence".

In the chapter called "July" he describes a device which is known as 'A la Turque'.

What was he referring to?

I looked up my copy. It's a toilet -- described on pp. 121-122 of the book.

"a shallow porcelain tray with a hole in the middle and footrests at each side."

Topping. (Maybe this should be moved to the "lounge" section of the site.)

This famous composer (11 letters) died recently.

He achieved notoriety for (misrepresentation of?) his comments on one of the most talked about events in modern history.

The 3rd letter of the composer's name is "o" from toilet.

Happy holidays!

Since we seem to have a supportive Fodor's editor these days, maybe we can get Fodor's to award a prize to the person who answers the most number of questions correctly?

That will also encourage more people to play.

Maybe we can also keep things simple -- i.e. rather than use multi-part clues, use a clue that has a single part.

Maybe Fodor's can even ask questions?

Fodor's?

The game started out with asking fairly simple single-part questions, most of which didn't require research. Then questions got more and more difficult. I think you and YK were "too good," so then the multi-part question routine began.

Well I vote for single-part questions. Anyway these days I don't have so much time to waste.

Will Fodor's give prizes though?

How do you know?

Have you talked to them?

It's such a simple way to build good will. If I were Fodor's I'd do so. It could increase traffic to the website also and have all sorts of benefits, don't you think?

Maybe the resident editor is on vacation?

My clue was so easy. It has only one part! How come no one got it?
