European Community

Any thoughts on who the next memeber(s) of the European community may be?<BR><BR>The ex-Soviets - Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia?<BR>The ex-Warsaw pact - Czech, Hungary, Romania, Poland, Slovakia?<BR>The ex-Yugoslavs - Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia?<BR>The others - Switzerland, Iceland, Cyprus, etc.?

Those whose economies and other criteria meet the requirements. If I remember right they are Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, and Estonia. I believe also Poland, Latvia and Lithuania were on that list. So was Cyprus, but it is impossible as long as the question of northern Cyprus remains unsolved.

Almost definitely the poorer countries as they would have the most to gain in the way of handouts.

Serious negotiations are currently being held with Poland, Czech Rep., Slovak Rep., Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta and Cyprus. Many, if not all, of them are expected to join the EU in 2004-5-6.
