two is NOT necessarily better than one. And this is not someone with no travel experience at all>
I agree - I always travel solo and like it more but I was thinking that the more the co0mpany the less daunting it is going into the dark - someone to help solve problems when they pop up - two heads are better than one - except for things like kja points out.

shirley24, just pick and choose from free advice! Now we know that you have actually lived all over and so really are a seasoned traveler, though now pondering about travel as a single.
Picking up on the last from vincenzo32951, yes Grand Circle and Viking have popular cruises on major European rivers. Obvious advantages: planned itinerary, no luggage concerns, excellent meals. In our nine GCT we've done a few (Netherlands, Seine, Elbe R.) but lean toward land travel. All were excellent.
Yes, age makes a difference and anyway I am older than you. Luggage gets heavier, less resilience and the main thing is the walking so as of this year that's becoming a problem. Btw, we've done 41 Road Scholar programs, mostly US.

Sounds like a river cruise could be a great option shirley24. Less packing/unpacking and a really great way to see the sights from a different point of view. You don't need to worry about scheduling day tours, as these can be arranged for you, and if you pick the right itinerary, you will be sure to see the highlights that you choose. Danube river is a classic and hits some of the cities on your wishlist.
I like Ozarksbill recommendations of Viking and Grand Circle. Also check out Ama Waterways - I haven't taken their cruises before but have heard they have delightful food! Tauck is also top notch.
I found this website called Stride Travel that helps to narrow down your options between different river cruise and tour companies if you need another resource.
