"Judaism is approximately 5,800 years old"

It has always been easy to follow the recorded history of Islam.

When is the accepted birth of Judaism?

From memory, within Judaism I thought 3000 BCE was the accepted date of Adam and Eve. Abraham was 1700BCE?

The tulip bubble burst in the Netherlands
and

The tech bubble burst in USA about year 2000 !

Yes I agree with tom_mn....be nice.

We cannot all know all things equally.

Heck I have been to Vienna 5 time but I am sure anyone could pose 10 questions that would stump me.

tom_mn,

The issue isn't "playing nice." IMDonehere is a bigot, who has written many bigoted posts against Muslims, and is blowing his stack that I or anyone would dare to put Muslim and Jewish history in Europe on the same level. Looking at the list of people to whom Nobel prizes are given to, Muslims have a lot to be proud of for not being on the list. Sorry, but I don't think Henry Kissinger is much of a credit to anybody, or that Judaism is a better culture, nor do I think Jews have been bigger victims of hatred and violence than Muslims. Period.

I didn't question Stu Tower. Or is that part of IMDonehere's rant directed at someone else?

If somebody decides to put up a quiz revealing intereseting facts on Muslims in Europe, be prepared for the haters to come out, but I would be very surprised if the thread gets deleted. You can't make anti-Semetic remarks on Fodor's, but you can make all the bigoted remarks about Muslims it is fashionable to make, and feel very self-righteous about it I guess too. Not the sign of superior culture, I say, no matter how many prizes the Nobel committee hands out.

And yes, tulips are from Turkey. Shampoo is also from Turkey, and it was introduced into Europe by a Muslim importer who was later made the official "shampoo surgeon" to the royal house of the European country where it first arrived. Anybody want to guess which country it was and when?

Clue to above: The answer isn't Spain. Muslim countributions to making Europe smell sweet and look pretty and be intellectually advanced are not confined to Spain.

Hi sandralist

The Country was England and it was about the mid 16th century..which would be about 1750.

(The English never took a bath, so the Arabs had to show them how to be clean !! Of course I am kidding about the English not taking a bath: annhig is as clean as the pure driven snow

I think this Shampoo Surgeon opened the shop in Brighton

Tsk Tsk - quizzes should be fun - sad to see it end up with bitter accusations - let's stick to facts that answer the questions and leave personal acrimony alone - take it to the Lounge.

All of tom's questions were great - but we've diverged here into something that saddens me and my original goal of something being fun sans argugments, which are more in keeping with the Lounge but should IMO never ever manifest in the Europe forum and especially in something meant to be fun and unite Fodorites not divide.

Back tomorrow with a quiz about European Bridges!

Cheers,

Palenque

BTW - the quest for a black - pure black tulip - I understand is still fruitless - those dark dark purple ones that look black are purple - this is what I think to be true - lots of efforts for a black tulips but to date still a quest!

Yes, Percy, that is correct.

Well, I hope I at least piqued enough people's interest about the long Muslim history in Europe that they will quit listening to the people who try to demean it or obscure for their own agenda.

Most people would find it fun to learn all they haven't been told about the widespread, profound extent of Muslim influence in the fields of art, science, banking, gardening, food, and just everyday living -- like shampoo! -- in Europe, dating back so many centuries. But if you'd rather talk about bridges, sure. I have no access to the lounge but from what I gather, it is all about Muslim bashing, so no thanks anyway.

And answered nicely !

Percy,

There is no reason to be nice to people who aren't nice, and especially not in times of persecution against religious minorities.

I raised a point of curiosity about whetehr there had ever been a "quiz" about Muslims in Europe. I don't follow the quizzes. I was only curious. It is an interesting history and present day phenomenon.

For doing so, I was called a "known provocateur." That's nice?

I deliberately withdrew a statement I had made that might attract haters of Muslims, but that was ignored. Instead, we get a screed that says there are more white people who won rock and roll Grammys than black people, so the "facts" are that white people get the credit for American pop music -- oh, wait -- I forgot it was the Nobel prizes.

There is no reason to be nice to people who want to use message boards to widen the culture of racism.

Forgot to add:

I hope you will include a question about the location of the earliest bridge mill in Europe, and who built it.

In view of the nature of the OP and Fodors.

Is anyone surprised a bun fight is on the cards ?

At first I liked the Lounge - discussing politics, religion, etc but it always devolved into a verbal nuclear war - folks getting insulted by others beliefs or lack of them, etc. I rarely go there anymore and when I do it's the same ole same old pathetic folks attacking one another - not to say there is not a more pleasant side - a kind of social club where folks pat each other on their backs and become friends - it becomes their life 24-7 which is fine - just the actually relatively few old hags whose purpose it seems is to stir the pot - their raison d'etre for being there - yup a few rotten apples spoil the whole thing.

Let's keep the Lounge and Lounge type sniper attacks out of here please! Obviously the nature of this quiz lent itself to such spiraling out of control but the questions were of a good factual nature and should have been answered in a factual nature and in a good nature.
