Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello has the campanile AND the aged mosaic of a particularly demonic hell. The other campanile I would suspect is San Giorgio Maggiore, which I have climbed.

6. I can name more than four: calle, ruga, salizzada, fondamenta, rio terra, sottoportico. Since you said "thoroughfare" and did not specify land or water, I'll also include rio and canale.

nice one, Percy - I'll have to try it.

you're right Tom - well done.

ellenem - go to the top of the class! Since I last visited Torcello about 6 years ago the "heaven and hell" mosaic [on the left as you enter the Basilica] has been renovated and the colours, especially the gold, really zing. When our teacher bought the tickets for the Basilica [we got €1 discount per person for being part of an educational group] we were told that as well as the museum it included climbing the Campanile which i'm not sure I had ever really twigged existed. Anyway we all thought, even the kids, that it was too cold to be going up there especially as the museum was nice and warm, as well as being really interesting.

The other campanile is indeed the San Giorgio one - cheaper than the one in the piazza San Marco and just as good a view.

#6 - I set it at 4 as I thought that more than that might be too big a challenge, but obviously I needn't have worried - you've blitzed it. However there is one you've missed out - the common or garden "strada" as in strada nuova.

I have to say that my first foray into quiz setting was harder work than I had imagined, with lots of fact-checking required, but I needed to get the quiz out before I posted any more of my TR as lots of the answers are in it!

Thanks for coming up with the idea, PalenQ and thank you all for joining in.

"Strada" is actually uncommon in Venice -- only the one I think. Similarly, the common-on-the-mainland "via" is uncommon in Venice. I can recall only one -- Via Garibaldi.

I once stayed in a hotel on or near the Strada Nuova, ellenem, which is why the name stuck with me, but I'd missed the via Garibaldi entirely. I should have googled it!

I will put mind up later this evening when Europe is in bed but then they get first crack in the morning !!.

tarquin if you knew them all my hat is off to you and I bow to you .!!

I am going to run this by PalenQ because this is his Quiz, but I have been thinking that maybe we should do Monday Wednesday and Friday until about end of March

Then Tuesday and Thursday for month of April.

Then once a week during the summer.

The reason being is the time factor. I love these quizzes and the people that partake , we need more so don't be bashful

However as warmer weather approaches I am on the computer less.

I kind of don't have enough time for daily ones now.

Yesterday morning I took my Venice notes and pictures and DK book and went to the graveyard to place flowers....

then I took Vi's granddaughter to McDonalds,, all the time trying to answer question on my cell phone during time breaks.

You know on the Lounge , they have once a week "Freak Friday Raves and Rants and on Saturdays the have "Saturday Night Losers"

So I think during the summer once or twice a week would work.

It takes time to prepare which is good because you sure learn when you are the one making up the questions.

I am just tossing this out for debate and never forget that this is PalenQ's Baby, BUT I am the Judge

I would like to see Hetismij2 to do 10 question and they can all be on the Netherlands. I know she would do a good job as you also tom_mn !Q!

Het still waiting for my question specifically for Thin to be answered.
I can only assume googling is not that easy. !!

I agree with you percy - I have been trapped inside by the brutal winter here - -12 F again tonight - hgh tomorrow a balmy 12 F - gthere is no need for a daily quiz but a schedule yes may be nice so folks can look for it on certain days and then if the feeling strikes anyone can always do another - It was my quiz but I gladly would have it be everyone's quiz!

Percy, i like that idea but would defer to PalenQ as it's his baby.

Tarquin - cudos for getting them all right. Have you thought of entering Brain of Britain?

If i have time, i'll take up your challenge later, Percy.

OK Percy - I love a challenge. and never having been to Portugal, i have little knowledge to draw on save what I can find out via wiki etc.

this was your question

<<There is a popular square in this major Portuguese City, in the square is a statue of a King.
The statue was once in the centre of the square but has been moved.

What is the name of the Square.?
What is the name of the Statue?
Why was the Statue moved.?
Where was the Statue moved.?>>

I do have one advantage and that's a love of wine, so if we weren't talking about Lisbon, a good guess was Porto, and i discovered that there is a statue of King Peter [Pedro] IV in Liberdad Square, which is what i surmise you are talking about.

According to wiki, the square itself was much altered after 1916, so what I suspect could have happened was that the statue stayed where it was, but the shape of the square altered, leaving the statue in what seems to be a different place.

OTOH I could be entirely wrong.

as you say, Percy, maps and wiki are not enough.

Well this was fun. I stayed on a campsite near Punta Sabioni for a week last May & went on the vaporetti quite a bit - but still I only knew a couple of the answers.

In Porto:

I know the Square(Freedom) you are thinking of , it is virtually straight down from the famous Luis I Bridge in Porto.

The Statue of Pedro IV on a horse is very nice but it is centre of this long narrow Liberation Square that ends at the very ornate City Hall.

http://translate.google.ca/translate...o)&prev=search

Here is the Liberation Square and the Monument of Pedro IV.

Sorry this is not the one.

But don't worry I can hear Thin googling to beat the band, he will come up with it soon.

But very good attempt annhig ( )

Oh yes click on the Freedom Square picture.

That is the beautiful City Hall back at the end of the Square.
