well, [I think] I can do no 3:

the Venetian bridge of sighs or ponte dei suspiri links the Doge's palace, where judgment was given against malefactors, and the prison next door, where that judgement was carried out. and very grim it is too. The other Bridge of sighs is in Oxford, but I don't know what it links to what. BTW, there is another one of similar design in central London - I often used to see it when I was walking back to the Temple from some court or other.

Of course - always welcomed always wanted... I should have phrased the Bridge of Sighs question more broadly - I knew of the Oxford one but forgot about the Cambridge one.

Looks like tom mn take the prize with 6 correct answers and some partial ones. Like # 8 yes the stations are right but the new bridge is not the Pont Austerlitz.

#2, 5, 7 and 8 remain open - and anyone mentioning a different British mainland to off shore or islands gets credit too.

3. The bridge linking the New Quad at Hertford College, Oxford with its Old Quad is popularly known as the Bridge of Sighs, although it looks a lot more like a miniature Rialto Bridge to me.

However, the bridge connecting New Court and Third Court at St John's, Cambridge is also locally known as the Bridge of Sighs, though it looks even less like the original. But it was built almost a century before the one at Hertford.

I did a day there not long ago and had an awesome time - Iron Bridge Gorge - a national industrial heritage site with lots lots more than the bridge there.

There is one called Chateau d' Azay Rideau but it is on an island. !

#8 The train stations are Gare de Lyons and Austerlitz ( Quai de la rapee)

It is the Austerlitz Bridge at the Botannical Gardens of France ( Paris) and staring down from Bastille Square.
