I must have missed something...banks and credit unions are charitable organizations? They give you travellers cheques for free? I'd like to see the busniess model for that.

I'll repeat something I've said on other threads...there are TWO components to currecny exchange...the "fee" component and the "exchange rate" component. To know only one component of the cost does not give you the real cost of the exchange.

All those bureau de change that advertise "no fees"...do you ever wonder how they stay in business? That's because they make their money on the "exchange rate". It's a bit of a scam on unsuspecting tourists.

TCs are not a convenience, they are an insurance policy, and as such there is a cost associated. If you are willing to pay the cost, so be it. But they are not an economical way to finance a trip.

And the comment on trading $ for euros on the street or getting good rates at hotels? I'd like to know where in Europe I can get that, because I have never seen it in my years of travel.
