Euro Dollar
I have been to europe twice. Once in 1995 and in 1999. I will be traveling again in 2002. What is confusing me is by that time countries will be on the euro dollar. Has anyone have any idea how that will work. If I went to Germany today and a meal cost 22 Marks that would be about $10.00 U.S. When the Euro goes into effect what would be the exchange ?? help
Fred

Fred,
The currency that has been adopted in much of Western Europe is called the "Euro", not the "Euro dollar". Countries that have adopted the Euro have tied their present currencies, marks, lire, francs to the Euro. When the value of the Euro fluctuates, the value of the current currencies fluctuate correspondingly. Your 22DM meal will cost $9.67 in US dollars today and 11.25 Euros based on today's exchange rate. The value of the Euro most recently has ranged somewhere around eighty-seven to eighty nine U.S. cents in recent weeks. No one can estimate its worth in 2002 anymore than you can predict the value of the American dollar next year.

Fred:
You can find the current Euro rate in most financial pages of major newspapers. Wall Street Journal is an example. Last time I looked it was .861 American dollars per 1 Euro.
If my math is right, 22 Marks or $10.00 US equates to 11.6131 Euros.
John
