Edinburgh Marriott Dalmahoy How is it?

Wife and I will be staying three nights at the Marriott Dalmahoy Golf and Country Club just outside Edinburgh. Sounds very nice from what I have read. Who has stayed there? Any comments? Any suggestions as to easy way into the city from the hotel? We will have car but prefer to leave it parked at hotel when we go into Edinburgh. How is the public transport from the hotel (if there is any besides taxis)? Rooms - good or what? Tell me all you know I am listening and am all ears! Thanks so much so much so much.....

The hotel is only 2 or 3 miles from Edinburgh airport. So you have a few options if you don't want to take the car into the city. Take the hotel shuttle or a taxi to the airport. From there you can take the airport shuttle right into Princes street.

Elbergt,

My wife and I stayed there five nights for our 25th wedding anniversary.

It is located about five miles from the city center of Edinburgh. It is an old country estate. Additional rooms have been added and the design compliments the original building. The staff is professional and friendly. The grounds are immaculate and the restaurant overlooking the golf course is outstanding. One of the finest meals we have eaten anywhere.

If you play golf, they have a championship course used on the professional tour. There is a smaller restaurant that serves snacks, but the food is over priced.

I would suggest that you go out to the main entrance( the hotel is about a mile or so from the entrance through beautifuly wooded areas) and cross the road to a small restaurant for breakfast. Do not recall the name, but it is about 1/2 the price of the Marriott food and is excellent spot for breakfast. It's a chain restaurant, but I cannot rememeber the name.

Use the car to go to center city Edinburgh. It is an easy 10 minute drive, unless you go duirng rush hour, Then it is only 20 to 25 minutes to the Castle. Just go straight on the one road that led to the hotel and it will take you right in town. There is anmple public parking available.

Only interesting drawback that I recall is that the fire alarms in the rooms are heat sensitive, not smoke. So when someone takes a long, hot shower, the alarm may go off. Happened twice while we were there.

The old part of the hotel is very traditional, and the furnishings nicely done. Nice lounge area for late night beer or dornk. Also, ther must be 10,000,000 rabbits that come out on the golf course at dusk. Not sure if rabbit was on the menu or not, it should have been!

Enjoy!

Tom
Thanks for all the good info. Sounds like a great place. We are celebrating our 35th on this trip so this will be a good start to the trip (we are also going to Ireland as part of this trip). Your advice on the car into the city is quite helpful, as the suggestion for breakfast. We will be sure to follow your ideas. We also try not to run over any of the bunnies that come out.

Janis, thanks to you as well. I had considered the idea of driving over to airport and using public transport since I knew we were quite close. May do that as well.

Again, thanks to all that were kind enough to answer, even bo of ling.com (wonder if he/she is related to the family that runs the great Boling's Chinese eateries in Kansas City?)....

Elbergt: - I answered based on you saying you wanted to leave your car at the hotel. Whether or not you should drive into Edinburgh depends a LOT on when you are there. If you are at the hotel on weekdays or in August you would be MUCH better off taking public transport. But if you are there on a weekend, the drive into the city, and especially the parking situation, is much easier.

And it is no 10 minutes into the city center. The hotel is seven+ miles from Princes street on the main route from the west - three blocks in the city center can easily take 10 minutes. Count on 25 to 45 minutes on a weekday morning depending on the traffic.

Elbergt, my sister lives 10 minutes from Dalmahoy. She told me that, if you leave Dalmahoy after 9am, you should be in the center of town in 20 mins or less. You need to wait until after 9am because there is a business complex not far from Dalmahoy which generates a lot of rush hour traffic. Also, the Heriot-Watt University is not far away and it also has lots of traffic. She also advised that parking is getting very expensive in the city - part of local government's campaign to reduce the number of cars in the city center. I assured her that we're all rich Americans and we can afford it!!! However, there is, apparently, a bus stop right across the road from Dalmahoy and a regular service into the city center efery 15 mins. There are special, green, bus lanes, so it's a quick trip into town.
Good luck and enjoy Edinburgh!
