Can anyone advise on how much time to spend at Edinburgh Castle? We don't intend to do the war museum component.

Also seeking info on how best to get to Rosslin Chapel, and how much time this will take round-trip from the city.

I would allow a full day for the Royal Mile, including Edinburgh Castle at the top, Holyrood House (Mary Queen of Scots residence) at the bottom and the entire hilly street in between.

Then do Rosslyn Chapel on a separate day as a half day tour.

I also would allow one day for the Royal Mile -- Start at the top at the Castle then down hill including all or some of the Camera Obscura, Whisky centre, Gladstone's Land, Grass Market, St Giles Cathedral, several museums, and finishing up at Holyrood Palace/Abbey.

Re Rosslyn Chapel -- it depends on what the rest of your time in Scotland looks like. You can take a local bus or tour from central Edinburgh -- or if you are renting a car and touring around central Scotland -- you can just drive there.

I'm always surprised people don't mention the Scottish Parliament building, a few yards from Holyrood Palace.

I agree with the other posters to plan on a full day on the Royal Mile. On our trip in July, it took my daughter and I a full day to see Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, including a detour to Grass Market and Greyfriars. Holyrood Palace was closed by the time we arrived.

Because it's an embarrassment, perhaps? That's the way the Scots treated it after its completion - architecturally odd, cost overruns that make Boston construction look economical.

It is architecturally odd but if you know the story it represents it's actually very interesting.

We thought it was quite attractive but it was also closed for tours by the time we made our way down the mile.

The chapel is very small but very interesting. I was lucky and visited 10 years ago when it was still under refurbishment. Tourists were allowed on the scaffolding so I was up there taking pictures of gargoyles from above.
