Good suggestions regarding Nice PalenQ. Adding that it offers a very picturesque train route down the coast as far as St Raphael, directly along the coast, stopping at Antibes, Cannes, Juan les Pins etc.
And buses to the Alpes Maritimes and its hilltop villages (St Jeannet for instance) are excellent from Nice.
Although we stayed at Cagnes as a base, not Nice.
