Dune du Pilat and Cap Ferret in one day - is it doable?

Will be spending time in Bordeaux (4 nights) mid-June and would like to spend one day visiting the Arcachon Bay area (as a day trip). Am having a hard time finding one-day itinerary suggestions so have come up with my own idea but not sure if it’s doable or makes the most sense:
  • Will be staying in Bordeaux (old town area) and will have a rental car to drive ourselves out there
  • Drive out first thing in the morning, park and visit the Dune du Pilat
  • Park somewhere close to the ferry and ferry over to Cap Ferret
  • From there, either rent bikes to bike around or just walk – plan here is to just wander, eat late-ish lunch and enjoy some good wine and oysters
  • Ferry back, pick up the car, drive back to Bordeaux
To me it sounds reasonable but having never visited the area I’m not sure and would love some suggestions. Key questions/considerations:
  • Definitely want to explore Cap Ferret as the first priority, and also want to see Dune du Pilat because it just seems pretty cool – but thinking it would take too long to drive to the dune and then drive all the way around the bay to Cap Ferret. Hence the ferry.
  • Exploring Arcachon is less of a priority (seems less charming?) and I didn’t think there would be time to squeeze it in as an additional stop
  • Assuming based on other trip reports there is somewhere to park by the Dune du Pilat – but is finding parking near the ferry possible?
  • Once we disembark from the ferry, is travelling by foot/bike doable and do you think it’s necessary to reserve bikes in advance or just show up
  • Also assuming we don’t need to reserve ferry tickets in advance but someone please correct me if I am wrong here
Ultimately I think my question is: is it possible to visit both the Dune du Pilat and Cap Ferret in one day as a day trip from Bordeaux, and what is the best way to go about doing that?

Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions how to tweak this or make it more feasible! About us: group of 4 in our 30s-40s, active and able-bodied and just looking for a day to explore at a leisurely pace, relax, take in the environment and enjoy some good food and wine.

Thanks all!

Dune du Pilat is western Europe's largest sand dune I believe - all we did was prance down it and slowly climb back up - but nothing special there so takes little time, especially if not climbing up and down the dune.

I agree that the Dune du Pilat does not take a huge amount of time, so your schedule should be okay.

Sure, but I'm not sure it's the fun-filled day you imagine. And I am not sure why you think that Cap Ferret should be your priority. It's just a bit of sand and a couple of seafood shacks and a petit train, but go for it. Arcachon at least has some life and commerce. The Dune de Pylat is an Instagram moment and a breath-taking climb and a great view, but it's just sand. You and a thousand other people can park in the lot just below it.

Googling will give you all the information you need about parking and such. Obviously, the folks who run boats across the bassin to Cap Ferret have thought through the logistics.

Dune du Pilat and Cap Ferret in one day - is it doable?

Thanks very much all for your thoughts. I figured the dune wouldn't take too long, but who knows? Glad to get some perspective from people who have been there.

@StCirq I wouldn't say I'm imagining a 'fun-filled' day in Cap Ferret -- more like a nice, relaxing, pleasant day strolling around. I've heard biking through the pine forests is quite nice, for example. Looking for more low-key fun than a whole bunch of commerce and excitement. But that being said, I would be interested in your perspective as someone who is clearly more of a local expert. If you had a day to explore the area, knowing that you have a car and you're coming from and returning to Bordeaux, how would you spend the day?

As for the parking logistics -- Googling helps in a lot of these cases but sometimes it's surprisingly hard to find such specific information. And in any case it never hurts to get advice from people who have actually physically visited the area. Someone might have a good tip about parking at this lot instead of another one because it's closer or cheaper or something like that. This is why the forums are so helpful!

Oh yes, it is. We loved it.
We cycled from Biscarrosse to the Dune du Pyla, which was a nice ride. The prettiest stretch, IMO, is from Biscarrosse to Parentis-en-Born along the Biscarrosse Lakes. You could easily climb the Dune du Pyla, then drive to Biscarrosse, rent bikes and cycle to Parentis-en-Born along La Vélodyssée (26 km one-way).

Eggbert, I'm not a bike rider, but the pine forests of Les Landes are certainly intriguing in their own way. The shepherds on stilts that one may encounter if lucky are absolutely intriguing. And Dax, the hub of Les Landes, is the biggest spa town in all of France - dozens and dozens of hot springs and thermal establishments. Talk about low-key fun!

Just to put your suggestion into context.

Next Thursday, I’m cycling from Saint Emilion to Arcachon, Cap Ferret then to a hotel in Pauillac.

So in a car, your suggestion is totally doable!
