Dubrovnik, Villa Adriatica - hot water problem?

Hi,
Villa Adriatica finally accepted to let us have a room there, only because we will be there for 5 nights. As some other posters on this board noticed, they are not taking reservations for 2-3 nights anymore. At least not now for September…

Anyway, I am having serious doubts. In a recent trip report (Dec, 2005) another poster mentioned that <<The only complaint we had was that the hot water heater had to be turned on 45 minutes prior to taking a shower, and even then provided only enough hot water for one person to shower very quickly>>.

Has anyone else experienced this? Was this just a fluke? Or is this the norm for this villa? All comments and experiences appreciated. Thanks

xyz99,

We stayed in room 3 in September of 2004, and do not recall any problem with hot water. My memory is rather dim, but as we generally take leasurely serial showers, rather than simultaneous ones, I'm sure either my wife or would have noticed a blast of cold water.

I don't remember specifically about the Villa Adriatica, but my recollection of showers in general in Croatia was that they are the rather standard "instant" water heaters, i.e., they turn on when you turn on the faucet, inatantly heat the water continuously for as long as needed, and then turn off when you close the tap. No supply tank involved to run out and give you a nasty surprize.

You could call or email Teo and ask him. He was very cooperative with me in '04.

I am rather shocked at the drastic rise in prices since we stayed there. The location could not be better, but the reports indicate the rooms cost almost twice what we paid. Looks like our Fodor's enthusiasm has "done a Rick Steves" on the place.

Have a great trip!

We are planning a stay at Villa Adriatica also, but in May. Most people on this board recommend staying in Room 3, but when I emailed Teo he said Room 1 is the best and biggest room (it also costs 10 euro more per night). Can anyone explain the difference in the two rooms? Do you think the increased rates overall are worth staying here? We have seen places within the city for less.

Angela: I agree that Room 1 is a better room since it opens directly onto the terrace. I didn't get a look inside, but Room 3 and the Apartment were similar in furnishings, so I imagine they all were (Room 1 & 2 face the water, Room 3 & Apt. face the street). I would stay there again even if the prices were higher because the location is excellent and the terrace has an absolutely magnificent view. It is large enough to accommodate all guests if they all happen to want to use the terrace at the same time (unlikely).

I'm the one who posted the remark about the hot water in my Croatia Trip Report. Room 3 had a wall-mounted tank above the toilet and we were instructed to turn it on 30 min prior to showering. That was never enough, so we tried to remember to do it 45 min prior. It was inconvenient but not horribly so for just three days. It is possible that something was wrong with the unit or the thermostat, so you might want to ask Teo. He is the son of the owners but handles all of the correspondence because his English is best.

After contacting Villa Dubrovnik and being turned down for my 5 night stay in June,(He would let me book for 7 nights only) I contacted the "recommended sobe" in Rick Steves book, the Benussi home. They have 2 good sized rooms and a terrace. Prices are €50 and €56 per room. They were so kind and friendly when I contacted them, and we are so pleased to have booked our stay there. I found pictures of their rooms on the web when I did a search. They are located 5 minutes walk from the old towns Pile Gate.

What a shame that Villa Adriatica's popularity has affected their prices and responsiveness. I hope you have a lovely stay at the Benussi sobe, Images2.

Don't miss Cavtat...it's an easy bus ride!

Thank you, it's on our list! We are staying for 5 nights, so hope to have time to do alot, but also have time just to relax! From Dubrovnik we'll go to Hvar for 5 nights, doing a couple of outings with Atlas to see other islands. We have 15 nights for Croatia and 4 for Budapest (where we begin our trip), and 1 for Venice, just to fly home.

We are planning to stay at the Villa Adriatica in late May and I am having some trouble booking. They want a bank transfer of 80 euro but my bank does not do this. [We live in a small rural community.]

The bank suggested that I use Western Union. I have tried to ask Teo if this would work, but I have not received a response yet. I find it takes about 3-4 days before I get a response to my questions.

Does anyone know another way to send money to Europe? I know about Paypal but I don't think they have an account.

xyz-- We stayed in Room 1 in Oct., 2004. I vaguely remember a switch we had to turn on for hot water but we never had a problem running out of hot water in the shower.

Laurie-- I just calculated about what the required deposit would be in USD and sent them a personal check in that amount. Their bank charged a conversion fee which was in effect charged to me because I only got credit for the net amount. However, that conversion fee was much less than it would have cost me to send a wire transfer.

Thanks, dcdee,
I suggested to them that I could send them a personal check. I haven't heard back from them yet. I hope a personal check will work out.

I had asked Teo in an email about sending a personal check and he said that would not be the preferred method of deposit. He has just emailed the bank info, but I have not inquired at my bank as to the cost of doing the transfer.
I have found Teo to be most responsive and have gotten answers to my emails in two days.
I'm hoping the hot water will not be a problem for us gt
