If you stop by the Tourist Information office on Suffolk St, they can give you information and sell tickets to companies that guide day-trips to the Newgrange attractions and Trim Castle. Also visit the Grafton St. gate of Trinity College. You can sign up there for a variety of Dublin walking tours (which also depart from the gate).

retire, I've taken the train from Dublin to Cork and it was a very nice trip. I don't know if you could do it as a day trip, I'm afraid it would have to be over night. I did take the train from Cork on to Killarney. You can't go around the Ring of Kerry by train.
Trains go from a larger town to another larger town. Hope this gives you some help.

Compared to the rest of Europe, the Irish train system is pretty meager. But the bus system is thorough, so you could take a bus tour of the RoK. However, I think renting a car is the best option for Ireland (although I wouldn't take a car into Dublin).

You can travel N.S.E.or W. from Dublin by train. If you do travel be sure to take the express and for a journey to Cork the intercity express and I would commend 1st class. You and your wife can have a meal served at your table as you watch the Irish countryside pass by. Journey to Cork is appox. 2.5 hours.When you leave the station turn left and walk to the traffic lights, turn left and walk over the bridge and you will see the bus depot on your right. The bus to Blarney departs from here and does not take that long. 32 minutes.

I forgot to add that you can take train trips from Dublin to Limerick (2.5 hours)Killarney and Tralee (this is a journey that I would commend a night out)Galway (2 hours) Waterford (2 hours)Belfast (2.5 hours)
You can also get the slower trains and stop off at a place that is nearer to Dublin or the express train that makes few stops. (www.irishrail.ie)

You can go to any county here by train and come back the same night, but for long trips like Donegal, Cork, or Kerry, i wouldnt try a dry trip, as you wont have enough time to see the county properly then do the train ride back to Dublin for night time again, Trains are a bit expensive here in Ireland, i would try checking out the bus tours first. www.buseireann.ie
