dublin lodging

I will be in Dublin for 2 nights in October with another female traveler. Is Temple Bar area safe for two 35-40 year old females or should we consider another area of Dublin? Also does anyone have comments on Paramount Hotel or Number 31 Guesthouse. These are two places we are considering.

I would not reccommend the Temple Bar area for two women.

Myself and my friend were robbed and beaten there in the summer of 1999 and I have been told the area is even worse now.

Hi,
I would avoid Temple Bar area- if you're prepared to stay a little outside the city, you will find nice guesthouses and cheaper hotels: e.g Bewleys Inn in Ballsbridge.
Depends on your budget.

Cindy,

The paramount is on not in the Centre of Temple bar and I would say thats fine. It's right in the city and if the porice is right go for it. Try Handels also just besides Christ Church. Number 31 what street is that on? If it is wthe one I am thinking of thats good as well. Good eats by the parliament hotel are : Queen of tarts for breakfast same side of the street as the hotel. As well if you go into the entrance for Dublin Castle walk round the back and there is a garden and a large building beside theis. It's the Chester Beatty Library which houses the largest collection of Asian and Islamic art in europe. The Silk Road cafe (caffeteria style) has amazing food and beautiful coffee. I eat there most saturdays.

As for Anica, I am shocked to hear they were mugged and beaten. I have lived here for 8 years and not had any hassle. You are more at risk on O'connell street at night and if you are a 18-21 year old male than a woman. Do not let this scare you off as people are very friendly and helpful. I am in temple bar with my boyfriend at least once every 2 weeks and although its for people in their 20's we have our places we regulary visit. I have felt safer in Dublin at night than in NYC but that is my experience. It can get noisy when the pubs close thats about it.

As for Bewleys in Ballsbridge it is pricey and you need to get the bus into town. Check out laterooms.com as they have great rates last minute on Hotels.

Also try the Montclaire Hotel, Alexander Hotel. They are by Merrion Square and a quick walk to the shops/St. Stephens green.
I agree with the last posting but I don't think the Mont Clare is great, but the Alexander looks nice (I walk by it on my way to work ). They are both in a good area, in walking distance of shops , restaurants, pubs etc.

I stayed in the Mont Clare about 4 years ago, and at that time it was wonderful. Small but very clean, and close walking distance to everything central.

Temple Bar isn't THAT scary (I tend to doubt the beatings post) but it's more a nightclub scene that is best avoided if you're looking for more quiet and less 24-hour action.
