Goodness, I didn't realize that motor vehicle deaths were so high. Almost as bad as in the US, on a per capita basis.

Some interesting numbers in the BBC article, hetismij.

Italian media reported 36 road accident deaths in a single weekend this July, many of them alcohol or drug related.

I found the numbers of cars in Italy (680 per 1000 residents) and in Rome (2.4 million for 2.5 million residents) pretty remarkable. Even more, this:
<<In Rome, the risk for pedestrians is one of the world's highest. More than eight per 1,000 are killed or hurt each year, a risk 10 times greater than in London and 20 times worse than in Paris. >>

But the reports from other counrties also are ... sobering.

My gosh! Let us just say that I will be much more vigilant as a pedestrian in Rome after reading these sobering statistics!
