Driving times in Germany

So we're taking the following basic route:

Dachau to Berchtesgaden...84 miles
Berchtesgaden to Fussen...107 miles
Fussen to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber...127 miles
Rothenburg to Mokelstern...137 miles
St. Goar to Frankfurt...don't know mileage yet

My question is how can I expect the miles to translate into driving time on these routes? 30 miles/hour, 60 miles/hour?

There are several methods to get an accurate estimate of distance and driving time between locations. I use www.viamichelin.com and you can customize for the fastest, shortest, most scenic etc. itineraries. I always plot out these before going on driving yours and it really helps make decisions as to stops and daytrips. As a practical matter, if you can use an autobahn, times drop significantly--just don't try to hold a cup of coffee at 85 mph! And by all means, get a good map. Enjoy.

St Goar to Frankfurt - about 70 miles, most of it on motorway so not more than 2 hours.

You can easily drive from Dachau/Munich to B'gaden in a little under two hours. However, if you are doing this on a summer Friday or Saturday morning it can be hours of backup on the autobahn.

My best guess for B'gaden to Fussen would be about 3.5 hours

Hi,

Dachau to Berchtesgaden...84 miles
We've driven from Berchtesgaden to Munich airport (and vice versa) a number of times in a little over 2 hours. By the way, the airport is further away than Munich.

St. Goar to Frankfurt...don't know mileage yet
We've driven from Frankfurt airport to Bacharach (by St. Goar) in under an 1:30.

Berchtesgaden to Fussen...107 miles

We did this drive a few times, never all at once though. From Berchtesgaden to Innsbruck was under 2 hours and Innsbruck to Fuessen was about 2 hours.

All depends on the routes driven. We use www.viamichelin.com to map out our driving plans in advance. Use the "add a stage" option to better plan a route.

Those days of horse drawn carriages, when Berchtesgaden to Füssen was 23 Bavarian miles. Those were the days! 19th century. Funny, weird but nevertheless I like it. In the days of the internet horses and miles should become standard again.
Nice!

I always add on another 10-15% to the time viamichelin gives because we don't drive as fast as the Germans , and even with GPS, we occasionally exit accidentally or miss a turn and have to back track at some point.

We just returned from a week long trip to Germany, during which we probably drove over 1000 miles. Thankfully we had pre-mapped everything on google - the navigation system in our rental car was completely unreliable. I would highly recommend you map and print out your routes before you leave home, and buy a map as well. Enjoy your trip!
