Driving through Bordeaux, Laucerne and then to Champagne

I am going mad trying to plan a trip in August/September 2006 which will involve us hiring a car from Paris and driving down to Bordeaux and then across to Laucerne, Switzerland and then up to Champagne. All up we can spend 7 days before we need to fly out from Paris Beauvais airport. I would be really grateful for any assistance with anyone who has done a similar trip and how long you devoted to each 'leg' of the trip and where you think good stops might be. I've got distances from viamichellin but am still having trouble working out what is, in reality, possible.

Many thanks

7 days isn't possibly enough to drive from Paris to Bordeaux to Lucerne (did you mean Lausanne?) to Champagne. You'll spend all your time driving.

What are you trying to see in each of these places? That may be more of a factor in how many places you can actually see on this one trip.

Yes, distance needs to be cut way down.

Where are you starting from exactly?

Taking a train one way is something to consider.

Hi H,

Laucerne?

It's 8 hr to Lausanne and 10 hr to Lucerne.

It's 6 hr from Lausanne to Reims.

You have only 7 days. Are you sure that you want to use two of them driving across the country?

I also suggest taking the TGV to Bordeaux or Libourne and getting your car there. It will save you 3 hr.

How about:

Train to Libourne, pick up car

2 nights in region of St. Emilion

Drive to to Sarlat-La-Caneda 1 night

Drive to Dijon or Beaune 1 night

Drive to Reims 2 nights

You can rearrange your stopovers in Bordeaux, Burgundy or Champagne as you wish.

Have a nice visit.

That is what I was going to suggest--taking a train from Paris to the furthest point.

If Bordeaux is less of a priority than Lucerne, you could take a train from Paris to Besancon and be there by 10am. Lucerne is about 3 hours away.

Thanks so much for your help. I thought it was do-able on paper but obviously not. What I really wanted to do was to drive through the wineries in both Bordeaux and in Champagne and stay at lovely B & B's. My boyfriend really wants to go to Lucerne (sorry for the spelling errors). Would it be worth it to drive from Champagne and to Lucerne (and back)?

Instead of the wineries of the B ordeaux area, go to the ones in Burgundy. Such a trip including Luzern or Lausanne would be very doable.
