driving route from vienna to munich then to lucernern
We are planning on drving from Vienna Austria to make a stop in Salzburg for several hours, then go on to Munich for 2 days then to Lucerne for three days. What is the best driving route to take? Any suggestions on eating lunch in Salzburg as well.

Calculate your itinerary on http://www.viamichelin.com
Perhaps you need to put the names of the cities in local language: Vienna = Wien, Salzburg = Salzburg, Munich = München, Lucerne = Luzern.
Good luck!

My wife and I recently picked up a new BMW, and we drove between Munich, Vienna, Salzburg, and Zurich (among many other places). Much of the autobahn is slowed by road work all over Germany, Austria, and Switzerland due to window of opportunity, so allow MORE TIME than you otherwise might! For time planning, estimate 80-100 kph average even on the autobahn! (We also got caught on the autobahn at a near dead stop from Munich to Salzburg due to a major accident, for 1.5 hours!) The 'best' route depends on whether or not you have the time to enjoy secondary routes and the beautiful scenery, rather than taking the quicker and boring autobahns! I prefer the secondary roads over the autobahn, but sometimes you simply need to get from Point A to B as quickly as possible.
my advice: get off the "Autobahn", if you are on a not too tight schedule. Drive thru the Vienna Woods into Styria Province, continue on via the Salzkammergut to Salzburg, eat your lunch up on Castle Hohensalzburg.
To get to Munich via Autobahn takes just 90 minutes. From Munich to Luzern go via Garmisch, Reutte, Arlberg, St. Gallen and Zurich.
