Driving into Rome on a summer Sunday afternoon....
Avoiding this will mean we have to drive a long way as soon as we land, over 3 hours at 8am after flying all night.
So, which is the worst of 2 evils, driving south into Rome downtown from the coastal highway from Bolgheri, or driving south into Rome downtown from Montalcino or Montepulciano....which route would be worst in terms of traffic? This would be on August 23rd, a Sunday.
And if they're both horrific, what time does the traffic ease up, or doesn't it?
Thanks so much.

Most of downtown Rome seems to be off-limits to private vehicles - maybe there is an exception for Sundays
Fodorites have said they wandered by mistake past the no enter zone and cameras took their plates number and got bills from their car rental agencies sometimes months later.
hopefully someone will know the exact details - but i would not assume you could drive anywhere in downtown Rome save for the few major arteries.

Sundays *are* an exception, but you still might want to reconsider driving into downtown Rome.
On a Sunday afternoon in late August when Romans are flooding back into the city after vacation, I would not expect one route or one time to be better than another.

Generally speaking, life in Italy before 4pm on Sundays is pretty sleepy. If I absolutely needed to drive into Rome on a Sunday, I would try to do it during the lunch hour -- between 12:30 and 3pm.
