car rental picking up in Rome and returning in Venice

Hello everyone, I would like to know which is the best way to get from Rome to Montalcino and from there to Venice.
We are planing to pick up the rental car from Rome and return it in Venice, however I read a lot of posts about going by train from Rome to Orvieto or Chiusi picking up car there doesn't that make it more expensive. I am open for suggestions.
Thanks

People pick up the car outside Rome to avoid driving inside Rome. They are less concerned about any extra expense and more concerned about the possible agony a driving in Rome.

Hi T,

>...doesn't that make it more expensive?

You can pick up your car in Rome, at the Rome airports (usually an additional fee) or the two towns you mentioned.

Many folks don't want to drive in Rome.

Have you checked rates at www.autoeurope.com and www.novacarhire.com?

Train schedules and prices are at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

No, it is not more expensive except for the rail tickets. I would do it in Chiusi but make it before 1:00 and not on Sunday. From there, you have a lovely drive via Pienza etc. to Montalcino. It becomes part of your Tuscan expereince.

We did the trip in the reverse this past August, renting the car through AutoEurope and picking it up in Venice at Piazzale Roma at the end of the Grande Canal, returning it in Rome at an underground parking garage beside the Borghese Gardens on Via Galopatoio. Getting out of Venice was no problem at all; we left late morning on a weekday. Entering Rome on a Sunday afternoon in August was equally easy - traffic no worse than I would expect in any big US city. Except for a couple of minor turns it was a pretty straight shot from the A1 into the northern part of Rome and then to the garage. The reverse might be even easier since the people at the rental agency typically have very detailed maps that will get you where you want to go to get out of the city.
