Hi,

We are a young couple travelling in Jul and would be in Italy from 24th Jul to 2nd Aug.We would be arriving to Venice from Lucerne.
Our itinerary so far is
24 Jul - Venice
25 Jul - Venice
26 Jul - Florence
27 Jul - Florence
28 Jul - Tuscany/Siena
29 Jul - Tuscany/Siena
30- Jul - Rome
31 Jul - Rome
1 Aug - Rome
2 Aug - Rome ( depart to sydney)

I would like to knwo if the above itinerary is good enough to cover these places. Also for exploring the tuscany area, is it good to hire the car from Siena to avoid the traffic in Florence or is it not that bad to rent the car from Florence.

Also for going to Rome, where can i drop off the car in the tuscany region to take the trian to rome.

Some will say you're trying to fit in too much, but this itenerary will give you a good overview, if you don't mind a fast pace, hitting major highlights in Italy. You can rent in Florence as you leave, just get good instructions on leaving without driving in restricted zones. I've done this twice (Hertz, renting at their Via Maso Finiguerra location, a close walk from the train station). I returned the car on last year's trip in Orvieto right across from the train station, then simply walked right into the train station for an easy hour or so trip into Rome. Alot of people use AutoEurope, but by joining Hertz's free club, I've gotten better rates on Hertz both trips, and the rental and return are simple. Orvieto is a lovely city in Umbria, if you have a few hours to wander around before the train ride into Rome.

Drop one---you will have too little time in Venice by the time you arrive. Drop the car in Orvieto.

You could stay in Florence and take a bus trip to Siena one day, then another train trip to Lucca or Pisa the next. Then you would not be moving around so much. You would get a good view of the Tuscan countryside taking the bus and train. Then you can take the train to Rome and eliminate renting a car altogether.

OR, after the day going to Siena, you could take the train to Orvieto, which is a truly lovely town, stay overnight before continuing on to Rome as planned.

thank you all for your suggestions. If we opt not to rent car, can we explore Tuscany region using public transport keeping Florence as our base for 4 days?
