oh Dawn..im so glad things are looking better for you!!
what a time you have had
we are going to moscow and have been told that the izmailovs are far out
but then it depends where you want to meet your daughter
i have heard ok things about the peking in my research but have never talked to anyone who has stayed
we are looking at apartments too- in the arbat region but i dont have the addresses- only working from the travel agents travel brocures
i have a few notes ihave been making - i dont have the original links
but i have noted that gamma delta is ok but the gamma alpha is better..gamma delta apparently is very hot, poor quality but it's next to a a big market and has good security

hotel savoy is well located

the sevastopol has nice rooms

sovietsky historical is supposed to be nice

hotel tatiana is in a nice neighbourhood an has good rooms

hotel tiflis is a small hotel and has great reviews

warsaw is the best value apparently

the golden ring is in the centre and has been renovated in 2005
i have a price here for that one:239 usd per night per person!

(all the hotels i have here in my notes are rates for just one person)

the slavyanka is rated only a 2nd half star and is 135usd per person

the belgrad is good value

i have been told by everyone that it's very hard to get anything central for under 300 euros a night ( i hope thats not per person)
if you decide you can stretch your budget check out the arbat hotel

i did email a lady who rents out a private apartment ( i found a good review for this one) serpukhovskaya metro station - she has a website
she wanted 75 euros a night for june next year
seemed fine but i cant vouch for somewhere i havent stayed, of course

hope you find something suitable
and all the very best for your journey

One of the Izmailovos will probably suit your needs, it's by a metro (Partizenskaya) for access to other parts of Moscow.

Iris Congress is a good hotel but not convenient for central Moscow, again might suit needs.

Sovietsky Hotel is very good also, bit more central.

Holiday Inn have a few properties eg Suschevsky or Vinogradovo (good for SVO) which offer good rates but since the dates are not mentioned difficult to be accurate about that. Rates are usually per room not per person.

Cosmos is OK but nothing more, caters to tourist groups.

Marriott Tverskaya is the least expensive of the Marriotts and is central but might be over the budget.

You all were so wonderfully helpful I thought I would put a final touch on the story. My sister and I just got back from Russia on Monday. We stayed at the Novotel Hotel on Novoslobdaskaya Street, right across from a Metro station and it was wonderful! I would highly recommend it. The staff was wonderful and spoke English. The concierge there was extremely helpful. The rooms were nice and air-conditioned which was a big plus since it was extraordinarlily hot in Moscow last week. The breakfast bar they had included in the room price was substantial and delicious. We had a good four days with my daughter. Unfortunately she is not going to return to her husband or to the states at this point. But she seems to be getting ber business taken care of over there and will be job hunting soon. Her living situation is also taken care of. We actually did take the train out to Vysasma and saw where she was staying, and though far below the standard of living we are used to, it was fine and average for there. The train ride in and of itself was quite interesting. We took the more expenisve train out there and it was comfortable - air conditioned, assigned seats. The cheaper train back was not so pleasant - hot, and by the time we were a few hours from Moscow we were packed in like Sardines with people standing in the aisles. And very uncomfortable benches to sit on. But it was an experience. So thank you all again for you advice and input. I did use the Travel Documents Systems that was recommeneded to get our visas and they were great. The story does not have a totally happy ending for us and the family is sad, but it is what it is. And all of your input really helped in the accomplishimet of our trip.

You need good health insurance and a tank. And even then your injuries might be life threatening!!! ;o)
It is the most fearsome driving I have ever seen.
You say "an outlying area"--take the subway. Enjoy getting there safely and being there.

Well, I did answer 'way too soon (should have looked at the date!), but what an interesting saga. I am sorry the outcome isn't more satisfactory from your point of view, and really sort of wonder what kind of "epiphany" this young woman had.
You seem OK with it, and I'm sure a major part of that is that she is safe. It is scary when your children are REALLY out of touch with you, and you can't be sure where they are.
Good luck to all of you.

Dawn - thanks so much for the update! Sorry you didn't get the outcome you hoped for, but sounds like the door is still open.
