Just returned from Italy where we picked up a car in Rome and drove through Tuscany. We were so impressed with the road signs. And you can print some maps from the internet in advance. We,too are from Boston so this was a piece of cake. We did however, research where we would pick up our car so it wasn't in the middle of Rome. That was helpful. Enjoy!

What do you plan to do with the car when you get to Amalfi?

Where do you recommend printing maps from? Mapquest? Also, I am guessing we will not use the car a ton while in Amalfi. We were originally planning on flying home out of naples, but they are closing the airport for a few days when we are leaving. So we will have to drive from Amalfi back to Rome to fly home. It is a bit of a hike, but we are up for it.

It took us twice as long as we thought to get out of Rome...kept getting turned around in the round-abouts. The bikes whipping by took time to get used to...we drove from Rome to Sienna..to the coast of France..to the lakes region...then to Venice, where we were happy to turn in the car. We love driving trips in the states...so it was fine for us...our first trip to Europe. Only one issue with the first time we had to gas up...messed up the pump some how...tried to use the wrong type of fuel...owner was angry..said it would take him hours to reset something...my husband was red...but, owner refused $ for his headache. We would drive again...on your own timeline...etc.

We have driven from Rome to the Amalfi
Coast and it wasn't bad at all. How-
ever we went off season. It wouldn't
be fun during high season.
If you drive out of Rome, I would do it very early in the a.m. The streets
change names often and it is confusing.
It is one of our favorite countries,
we have been there 3 times and still
have a lot to see.

Because my husband does not like heights, we drove the Autostrada from Rome to Pompii then over the mountains so that we drove the Amalfi coast road from south to north, hugging the mountain instead of overlooking the sea drop side. It worked!
