Driving in Germany without hotel resevation

We are driving from Munich to Bonn and do not want to plan every stop. We do plan to drive the romantic road visit Neuschwantstein castle , Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Lake Constantine. Is it crazy to think we will get an hotel room in early May with out having a reservation. We will not have our laptop with us so can you suggest a way to get hotel information while we are in Germany?
Thank You

Last June/July we traveled for 2 weeks in Germany and Austria.
Normally I have every night prebooked but the rainy weather caused me to wing it. We never had an issue finding rooms, we did not have a GPS, cell phone or laptop so we looked for signs...Zimmer frei...and we had nice places with great views and friendly hosts.

Most tourist information offices, which are in about every town, will find you a room for the night. We did this in May several years ago and never had a problem finding a room

Since May 1st will be on a Saturday, the only *busy* weekend you can expect in the first half of May will be May 13-16 (incl. Thursday/Ascension Day which is a public holiday where you will be). That does not mean that any location will be without rooms, but you may want to seek the assistance of tourist informations especially on those days.
In any case, most tourist informations close quite early in the evening (usually around 6pm).
Some towns, esp. mid-size towns that are bit bigger than the usual village, have started to signpost "hotel routes" which will guide you from one hotel to the next.
But if you are somewhat flexible, I doubt that you will have any problems at all but rather stumble over accomodations that you never had thought about in the first place, like farms which rent rooms and serve the milk for breakfast straight from the cow

I totally agree with Cowboy.

It might be helpful to use the internet in order to find your next accomodation. Most hotels will have a computer with web access that can be used by the guests. If you are staying at the hotel, you can search accomodation for the next night. You can also bring your laptop and use the hotel's WIFI. However, most German hotels will charge a pretty steep fee for WIFI. So, find a WIFI stick which will work in Germany. Another option is the iphone.

For hotel search, www.hrs.com is a good site. It works quick and easy. They show only hotels which are available and you can sort by price, quality or location.
