Driving in Austria: Tax Disc

Hi all,

I will be renting a car in Munich and driving into and around Austria.

I have discovered the "Motorway Tax Disc" - 7.6E for 10 days, 21.8 for 2 months.

Do I have to buy the disc if I will be driving only on lesser roads, eg, B188?

No. The vignette only applies to limited access highways, and they are well marked with warnings. I did not use the vignette when driving in Austria, or Switzerland for that matter, but it does at times present problems. In countries where the toll toads are paid on a as-you-go basis, such as France and Italy, the alternative to toll roads are well marked. Not so in Austria and Switzerland. I got lost more than once trying to drive from Vienna to Italy without using the toll roads. If I did not get lost in Switzerland, it is because a Swiss sent me detailed information and maps to direct me.

No, but if you accidentally enter a Motorway, fines will be 120€ or 400€ if you can't pay at once or refuse to pay. All credit cards and Maestro accepted.
Arguing doesn't help ;-)

Thanks for the responses folks.

Here's a complication.

I'm coming into Salzburg from Munich on the A8/E52, which changes to the A1/E60 at the border.

From what I can tell from various online maps there is a canal marking the German-Austrian border, so I can't get off the motorway in Germany and come in on a lesser road (or can I?)

I don't mind buying the tax disc.

Is there a stop on the A8/E52 at the border where I can buy the disc?

These thingies are called "Autobahn vignettes" and they are so common, I bet you can buy one on the German side before you hit the border - in gas stations, tobacco shops and such, and if there still is a border station, you should get it there, too, also sooner is better.

I know that near the Swiss border even the German post offices have the Swiss vignette - quite likely a post office on your way to Austria will have them.

You can buy them for limited terms (unlike the Swiss that only goes for a calendar year), so it's no big deal.

No need for an extra stop. The disks are sold at any "Autobahn-Raststätte" on A8, starting at Irschenberg.
