Driving from Venice to Verona

We are planning a pre-cruise trip and would like to visit Verona and Lake Garda. I know there are a lot of trains going to Verona, but we are concerned dealing with luggage may be an ordeal on the train. I drove in the Luberon area of France last year with no problem. I do plan to use a Garmin. Would driving in Italy be similar as long as I do not drive in Venice? Stu, your advice was invaluable last year. I am hoping to hear your suggestions for this trip. Thank you.

We picked up a car in Verona (near the Porta Nuova train station) after a few days there and then drove up the western shore of Lake Garda on our way to the Dolomites. Coming back, we drove on the eastern shore of Garda and then onward to Bologna. We thought it was very easy with GPS. You'll want to pick a hotel in Verona that offers parking, and note that the city does have a ZTL (limited traffic zone) that you can't drive into without approval arranged by your hotel if it's inside the zone.

The driving experiences we've had in Italy and France are similar with the exception of Italy's fondness for the ZTL concept.

How many days do you have?

I go to Verona frequently; you do not need a car to visit most areas of the city and that no-vehicle zone isn't all that big. There are several pay garages in the city you could use and some of the hotels on the Corso Porto Nuova have parking but I suspect you probably wouldn't consider one of those places anyway.

What you really do need the car for is Lake Garda since rail connections are few and basically only at the south end.

There really aren't that many places in Venice (the part you'd want to visit) you CAN drive so no worries there.

Driving FROM Venice to Verona is much like driving the New Jersey Turnpike near Elizabeth, NJ.

Driving from Verona north is fine, and getting a car as you leave the city is sensible.

You're not indicating how many days you are planning. Trains Venice to Verona take an hour and a half, from there to Desenzano del Garda half an hour. Get a room at the Hotel Nazionale. There are ferries to various ports on the lake.
